Guaranteed lock as Romneys VP pick (unless he isn't)

Robert Jones "Rob" Portman (born December 19, 1955) is a lawyer and the junior United States Senator from Ohio. Portman, a member of the Republican Party,[1] succeeded retiring Senator George Voinovich in 2010.[2] From 1993 to 2005, Portman served in the United States House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 2nd congressional district, which stretches along the Ohio River from the Hamilton County suburbs of Cincinnati east to Scioto County and Pike County. Portman won seven consecutive congressional elections with over 70 percent of the vote.[3][4] During his career in the House, Portman acquired a reputation as "one of the few Republicans who regularly form alliances with important Democrats to get legislation enacted."[5]

Portman served in the first Bush Administration as White House counsel and then as the president's chief lobbyist.[5] He returned to serve in two federal cabinet positions under President George W. Bush, from May 2005 to May 2006, as U.S. Trade Representative and from May 2006 to June 2007 as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).[4]

In 2008, Portman founded Ohio's Future, a political action committee which raised money for Republican candidates.[6] In 2008, Portman was cited as a potential running mate for Republican presidential candidate John McCain.[7][8][9] He is considered a possible pick for Vice President on the Republican presidential ticket in 2012.[10]

So I looked up the political positions of Rob Portman, and found the following link.

http://votesmart.org/candidate/political-courage-test/27008/rob-portman/

As votesmart gave ole Portman a score of zero courage in defining his political positions

So I agree with our techs here, Rob Portman is the perfect Romney VP pick. As he is very similar to Romney the incredible plastic man, who has been on both sides of every issue since he entered politics. And even better yet, he became born again in 2008 as a card carry reactionary when it was seeming politically convenient to do so.

And it sure sounds like ole Rob is cut from the same cloth. We bought a pig in the poke with GWB, and now have buyers remorse. I am going to get my decider daisy, pick the flower petals off one by one, Portman will be a fine VP, no Portman will be a jerk. But the experiment will take a while, it takes far more than just one daisy to have a statistically significant cross section.

Another thread where you say one thing in the thread title but the opposite in your OP. You are on a roll.

I've been convinced that he has been the favorite for awhile. The fact that he is from a Ohio, a critical swing state clinches it.

Bland, white guy. Non threatening. Little charisma. Closest thing to a Republican who can be said to have actually worked with a Democrat.

I think the reason we have not heard too much about him from the Romney camp is that they want the announcement to have maximum effect.

I think ol Rob would have no problem supporting both sides of any issue, with reservations, of course.

I would be personally offended if any leader of mine was ever named "Rob."

Possibly. I actually feel Bobby Jindal might work also. He doesn't come from a swing state like Portman, but he's smart, is well liked by the conservative wing of the party, and might help with the "old white people" image of the GOP (especially among Asians, one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the country).

Kinda a very dubious contention to me. Just look all at all that black and Hispanuc support the GOP won when GWB&co gained when they elevated very sleezy Rice, Clarance the Clown Thomas, and Alberto the terrible as our Attorney Hiss boo apamic Attorney General. Maybe Karl Rove as a trurd blossum may think a minority group will go gaga over a trojan horse, but its still a non starter.

Why do you say that? He's not a 'sexy' pick for VP, but neither was Dick Cheney or Joe Biden, and he's unlikely to be a drag on the ticket like Sarah Palin or James Stockdale.

Why would you put Joe Biden and James Stockdale among that other trash?

UH, Oh. Obama has surged in Ohio. A new poll puts him 9 percentage points ahead of Romney.
Portman is no longer the heavy favorite. Its doubtful his selection would be enough to swing Ohio.

I like Portman and think he'll be a strong presidential candidate in the future; however, pairing with Romney would be political suicide and I doubt he'd take it, especially after he didn't want to be W's VP.
