Medical Records

I hate paper, more than anything. A few months ago, my old doctor from my childhood sent me a package with my medical records that was about 2 inches thick. I have no idea what to do with these things, and again, I hate paper.

I was thinking of going through them and taking out the important things, like EKG's, shot records, etc., and getting rid of the "doctors notes". But many of these are over 7 years old, so I assume he sent them to me before they destroyed them (don't doctors have to keep records for 7 years?)

Can I send them to some company to put them into a PDF? Should I just mail them to my new doctor and they can do as they wish with them? Should I just shred them?

Just make sure they're correct. Some how and in some way they had me noted down to drinking 8 bottles a wine a day.

Don't know how much you could do as a kid, but shit, check it out.

I would kill for Kaiser to get off their asses and send my lawyer my records. It's taken 3 phone calls from me, 2 letter from my lawyer, and one phone call from the secretary just to get to the point where they'd tell us why they COULDN'T send them.

HIPAA is a major PITA. Each hospital and sometimes each doctor have their own specific releases that are rejected for the slightest of reasons. If you can get through the red tape, you get charged $20 for a search, $1 a page, $5 for shipping, etc...

Keep it, or have it scanned to a disc if it bothers you that much. If you ever are going to use them or have another Dr. review them however, they're going to want the original chart.

I don't understand why hospitals/doctor offices use paper so much. EHR was supose to replace paper, not make more! I work in a hospital, and I see how badly paper gets wasted around here, it's sad really.
