A skull and bones found near the Florida home of missing child Caylee Anthony are those of the little girl and she was the victim of a homicide, the Orange County medical examiner said Friday.

"With regret, I'm here to inform you that the skeletal remains are those of the missing toddler," said Dr. Jan Garavaglia.

The manner of death was ruled a homicide by unknown means, according to Garavaglia.

Garavaglia determined the bones found in a privately-owned wooded lot were 2-year-old Caylee's through nuclear DNA analysis.

"They are not intact. They are all disarticulated. They are completely skeletonized," the medical examiner said. She said some of the bones found were "tiny."

The news caps a six-month-long search for the little girl ? who was last seen in mid-June but wasn't reported missing by her mother until a month later. The mother, 22-year-old Casey Anthony, is behind bars without bond and charged with her daughter's murder.

The child's next of kin, including her maternal grandparents George and Cindy Anthony; Casey Anthony and other relatives, have been notified of the findings, according to the medical examiner.

"The bottom line is, no child should have to go through this," said Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary, his voice breaking. He called it a police chief's "nightmare case."

Ahead of the announcement, Florida police released evidence photos from the Caylee Anthony crime scene, among them one of a book they say they found in the woods that the child had been photographed reading before she vanished.

The pictures were among several cops publicized before the afternoon news briefing.

The book is among numerous pieces of evidence Orange County Sheriff's deputies say they found in the wooded area where Caylee's remains turned up.

Also Friday, police re-interviewed a county water meter reader who earlier this month discovered what likely are the girl's remains.

Detectives deny the worker is a suspect in the child's death.

The worker found bones Dec. 11 near the Orlando house where then 2-year-old Caylee lived with her mother and maternal grandparents. He also had called in a tip to police on Aug. 11, 12 and 13, telling them to look in the same area for the remains, police said.

Orange County Sheriff's officials say they believe the unidentified tipster was in the area on Dec. 11 following up on his own lead when he discovered the bones and skull.

Capt. Angelo Nieves said police are questioning the worker again, as well as the sheriff's deputy who took the original call. They want to know more about what prompted him to contact authorities and how they handled the tips.

The meter reader first called Aug. 11 to report a bag by the side of the road, MyFOXOrlando.com reported. A deputy wasn't able to locate the worker, the station said.

The following day, the meter reader called a crime hotline. The information was passed on to the Orange County Sheriff's criminal investigation division.

And on Aug. 13, the utility worker called cops a third time, MyFOXOrlando.com reported. He met with police, and a deputy did go into the wooded area to investigate the worker's claims, but didn't find anything. The scene was then cleared as a possible place of interest in the case.

There is now an internal probe under way within the police department into how the matter was handled.

"There are a lot of questions about the thoroughness of that response," Nieves told MyFOXOrlando.com.

Investigators were back at the wooded crime scene Thursday in their exhaustive dig for evidence. They said late Thursday they found additional bones that appear to be from a child.

Meanwhile, a representative for the defense lawyer of Caylee's mother Casey Anthony accused police of lying to the press and suggested they could be tampering with evidence at the site where a little child's bones were found.

Todd Black, a spokesman for Anthony's lead attorney Jose Baez, complained that investigators won't let the defense team observe their work at the scene where remains believed to be those of Anthony's daughter Caylee were discovered.

"Some of their comments are blatant lies," Black told FOXNews.com. "History has shown that in some cases authorities have been caught tampering with evidence. That is something we hope is not happening. We're not accusing anyone of anything."

Now.....what I don't fucking get is how did investigators and searches MISS this? They were found just blocks away from the Grandparents home. Didn't it SMELL around the area for several months?

Next......could remains be skeletal (no skin) after just 6 months? Did something more happen to Caylee than just "killed"?

Such a sad case. Im still not convinced its mom, but we'll see. At least the family has closure now. There was no trauma to the bones, so now effectively capital murder is off the table with only bones. We just wont know how she died without flesh. There was a stronger case against her BEFORE they found the remains.

I take it you have not read the stories? its even worse. Someone called in a tip several times about the trash bag she was in. I think the 2nd time he called they sent a cop who said he did not see anything.

So they knew about where she was for a while but sloppy work left her there. I bet they could have found more evidance, maybe even cause of death, if they got to the remains more quickly.

RIP Caylee

It's so obvious its the mom.

1) Kid goes missing, mom does nothing for a month? She kept saying the kid was with a babysitter, until she finally was questioned too much she had to say she lost the kid. If nobody would have forced her into coming up with Caylee (bring her here right now), the mom would probably still be lying about her kid being with a babysitter.

2) Kid ends up near moms house? A half mile a way?

3) Kid ends up in the wooded area Mom used to hang out at as a kid? We all had our hangouts as a kid, be it a beach, a wooded area, a park, and this girl ends up in the wooded area hangout of Casey, a place she probably knew well?

4) Kid ends up missing, mom goes out and parties? I can understand people need a release from stress, but the amount of partying this gal did made it seem more like celebrating. 5 days a week she was out bumpin-n-grinding?

5) Evidence of decayed "flesh" in Mom's trunk?

6) The endless deception on the mom's part. Who was the babysitter? "Oh some mexican chick in this apartment building. Don't know who she is... It was apartment 304..." "But nobody lived in Apartment 304 for 2 months before Caylee went missing." "Oh... Well. I don't know, stop picking on me!!!"

How much more evidence do you really need? A video of her killing the kid? As the saying goes (Judge Judy) if something just doesn't seem right, you know someone is lying.

Its plain simple to me, mom lived the party lifestyle, kid got in the way. The amount she partied after the kid went missing is evidence enough. Its on record the mom went out and got drunk, stripped, shacked up with people like 5 times a week after her kid went missing.

Casey needs to be hung from the nearest tree. Even if she didn't kill the kid herself, she knew of her kids death. Either someone else did it, or it was an accident and she was covering it up to save her own ass with absolutely no regard to her daughter. She is a selfish piece of shit in any case and that is obvious by her complete negligence and the way she celebrated her daughters disappearance.

Wow, that's weird. It looks like the guy who found the remains suspected or knew they were there for many months. Odd?

with the tipster evidently very much interested in the area where she was eventually found, I wonder how detectives can rule him/her out as a suspect?

Detectives deny the worker is a suspect in the child's death.

That just doesn't seem kosher.

The mom will walk. The police did an OJ on this investigation. Getting the body before it was a total skeleton probably would have helped.

I thought I had heard that the area the body was found was underwater when the child went missing. This could account for the advanced decomposition, there are a lot of nasties in a swamp.

As for the meter reader/tipster. Wow!?!??? Maybe, he is covering for a friend of a friend. Who knows. Maybe, something overheard he wasn't supposed to have overheard. If everybody involved were heavy into partying, things are often said that shouldn't. He could feel his life might be in danger.

The mother is attractive, nothing strange about it except that she's probably a murderer.

What I don't understand is how they ruled it a homicide if they don't know how the kid died.

Well it wasn't a suicide unless she tied herself into the bags. :(
How many other options are there?

Homicide is the obvious assumption, but I was under the impression that medical examiners based their conclusions on medical evidence.

I am wondering if that area was searched earlier or not. I have not read anything that says they looked there way back when the case started.

I would expect that the police would have a map and mark off each area as they searched it. Anyone have additional info on this??

Agreed. With no soft tissue and no damage to the bones they found, homicide is still an assumption. The only definite crime at this point is improper disposal of a corpse.

The mom is toast.

There are stories that say the body was found with tape near what would have been the mouth. That means it wasn't some type of accident and therefore she was killed.

The fact that mom did not report the girl missing for two months pretty much dooms mom. If mom had reported her missing the next day then maybe she could have gotten away with the babysitter kidnap story.

The only thing that will keep the mom from going to ol'sparky is the fact that they have no motive in the killing.

I really feel sorry for the grand-parents. To lose a grand-child and know that your own child killed her has to be devastating and on top of that they have been getting tons of crap from the locals who think they may be in on it. Just a sad story all around.

Buy some chicken legs at the grocery, and leave them in a plastic bag out in the woods for 6 months. You'll get your answer.

Yeeesh.

This post is dead on. I'm a parent, and if one of my kids went missing, my life would come to a screeching halt until that child is found. No way I'd be hitting the town. Casey Anthony just reeks of guilt. What a narcissistic psychopath.
