In yet another attack on Qualcomm's turf, Mediatek has recently announced that the Mediatek MT6795 is capable of 480 fps at 1080p. For comparison, the flagship iPhone 6 is capable of 240 fps at a measly 240 fps. You might be asking, why? You might not be into sports.

But even more importantly, this marks yet another but significant shift in the high-end SoC space and the slow erosion of Qualcomm's domination. Samsung are already gearing up for a high-end battle and as Samsung are losing sales, other competitors will be more recepting to using their stuff, from AMOLED screens to their SoCs.

The Mediatek MT6795 is:

That list also forgets this key part:

  • Integrated, low-power hardware support for H.265 Ultra HD (4K2K) video record & playback, Ultra HD video playback support for H.264 & VP9, as well as for graphics-intensive games and apps
Basically, this is a direct attack on the S810. Integrated LTE, it's all there. Mediatek is also notoriously cheaper than Qualcomm at the low end so why wouldn't they be at the high-end, too, if they want to gain marketshare?

Might explain the decision of Qualcomm to move their A72 to the midrange part of the market and as a result, lower prices.

We are already seeing flagship-esque phones at 200 dollars(Zenfone 2). This might accelerate that process.

MediaTek is bringing it lately.

A ton of money has been invested by the major players marketing the "Snapdraggon" SOC's. I wonder how receptive they will be to using Mediatek SOC's? (Generally in the past considered lower end) Or will these still be used primarily in Chinese devices?

Zenfone 2 is the pure evidence that we are being overcharged by smartphone companies.

This SoC will eventually find its way in a flagship specced $200-300 phone from the likes of Meizu and others. A big design win could help Mediatek invade the US and take on Qualcomm.

Will a 4+4 A57/A53 SoC @ 2.2GHz play nice with 28nm HPM though? No one else has used that process for an octo-core A57/A53 mobile SoC.

It just shows that there's a race to the bottom. There's hardly anything money to be made in the smartphone space, unless you put the logo of a certain fruit on your phone.

A pear? :D

It's all about the brand. And there are more expensive fruits out there. Let's crowdfund a better phone!

How does the physical imaging sensor works? Does it feed a continuous video stream to the imaging processors like water flow? Or does it have to physically do it like traditional films, physically processing individual frames at 480Hz?

I'm glad to see 1080p recording at 60 and beyond. It has taken way too long. But for 4K recording there does not seem to be any advancement, any new chip I'm reading about still says 30fps. That's not acceptable.

Still a niche at this point.
