media player won't play avi files, and won't autodownload the codec

running windows XP, trying to watch an episode of spongebob square pants - its an avi
media player tries to connect to some sort of codec server, but fails
i followed its directions and changed my internet security settings - but it still fails

i've got a bunch of AVI files, and can't view any of them

 
well i just downloaded divx player and codecs (and its included spyware)

it plays it, but no sound

jntdesign thinks he has it figured out. All of the other AVI files work now that he has the AngelPotion codec, but he still gets no sound from the SpongeBob one. We both think that it is because the AVI was created with no sound.
 
Try downloading the divx codec, preferable the one without the Gator (I hate Gator). It usually comes with a auto install file. If it doesn't, try right clicking on it and clicking install, then reboot. If it still doesn't work, upgrade your media player and reinstall the codec. If you still have no sound try finding an earlier revision of the codec. I've read alot of reviews that say the new version is a little buggy.

divx is real finniky, I use 5 different players to ensure that I will always be able to play the file perfectly on at least one of them, I have the nimo codec pack, the windows update for the mpeg-4 codec, windows 6.4 (7.1 wasn't cutting it so I downgraded and it works well) I use the playa, bs player, sasami2k, and real player, if it doesn't work on one, load it into the next, had this problem this morning with some dark angel episodes, wouldn't play with sound in 6.4 or real or sasami, but played fine in the playa and bs player.
