Media Player not showing video only sound

For some reason, Media Player is playing video and doing the sound, but showing no picture. I have media player 11 and would appreciate any assistance. I have tried to update it, but it is at the latest update. I used to be able to play these videos and all of a sudden, it doesn't play the picture just the sound.

This usually means that the video file needs a codec that Media Player doesn't have or doesn't recognize. What type of file are you trying to play?

Windows Media Audio/Video file

In addition, some files play fine. Most just play sound with no video. A few play sound but if I try to change the place in the file timewise, I generate an error.

Yup, it sounds like a missing codec problem to me as well. Why not play the video files with VLC Player instead? VLC Player has all the required stuff you will need to play most of the audio/video files without having to install many codecs. Also, you could install Media Player Classic and ffdshow.

If you however want to know/determine what codecs are required for playing a particular video file you can download and install GSpot (freeware) from here:

Here's a very detailed guide on how to use GSpot:

if use windows media player, then having k-lite codec pack installed is virtually a necessity as the codecs installed by default on wmp is very limited, personally i use vlc media player and media player classic.
