Media backup strategy for "the average guy"?

I use SyncToy, a free tool from MS to sync folders to external HDD. You need to set it up once and then you can just synchronize the specified folder pairs by a single button click.

I do that maybe every other month and keep the external hdd offsite (Eg. at work).

Next time Staples runs a 20% off sale, buy two Western Digital My Book USB 3.0 external drives for a $100 or so each. Copy all your stuff to each drive, then take one drive to work and lock it in your desk drawer. Bring the offsite one back home every few months to update it. You'll never lose anything under any circumstances.

+1

This is my "average guy" method except i troll on dealnews until something like a WD 1gb for $60.- comes along. Coupon code EMCYTZT58988

One develops "attitudes." I never bought an "out-of-the-box" USB HDD. I found a really good aluminum enclosure model built by Thermaltake -- can't remember the model number -- well -- wait a minute . .

Nope -- can't find it. They don't make it anymore. It was approximately the same shape as this one, but a tad thicker:

I have six of the boxes I can't show you -- IDE to USB2. I only use one power-pack/transformer, since I don't much intend to use more than one external USB at a time. I just move the cables to this or that box.

Now that I've found that TT unit in the link, it raises the thoughts I'd had for a long time: I have spare SATA drives; I need an SATA[2/3] USB3 external box.
