MechWarrior3 problems

I can't get the joystick to work in MechWarrior3.
I just upgraded my sytem to a PIII800e/P3V4X and have been having all kinds of problems including MechWarrior3 not seeing my joystick. I have Win98SE and the joystick works fine when I check it in control panel. I have a CH F-16 Flightstick with a Pro Throttle which works fine. Just no Joystick control. I've already tried reinstalling Mech3.
The games card controller is through my new SB Live Value. I haven't tried a fresh install of Win98 yet but Windows seems to tell me the joystick is fine.
Help. I have been looking forward to finishing MW3
at more than 20fps.
