Try throwing a ball with just your arm and see how far it goes. Most of the power comes from your body. Your arm gives it direction.
Try throwing a ball with just your hips and legs and see how far it goes (not sure how that's possible, though.🙂). I can throw about 35-40 yards with just my arm and shoulder. Taking an extra step and larger follow-through gives me an extra 15-20 yards.

I understand what you're getting at. I definitely downplayed the importance of a good follow through and you are quite correct that its very important. I hope I didn't give the impression that you should throw with your feet together and stiff upper body - "biceps and upper pecs" includes your arm and shoulder/chest. 🙂 Drop back, plant, one step forward, power from shoulder/biceps/pecs/lower body - in that order.

You know what. I've never had formal training, and the above post is just from my personal experience. I could be totally off my rocker - its been known to happen.

ok, I used much of your advice and I was able get the ball much further. Mostly, I found I was not grabbing it hard enough during the throw. I just gave up about the nails, I guess if they break, they break.

btw, immediately after the session, my husband ran upstairs to work out 😀

On a side note I think its great that you are interested in learning or perfecting your throw, hope your hubby appreciates your efforts, your throwing will only get better. My wife is pretty athletic and we have a lot of fun playing a variety of sports, now if I could only get her to try horseshoes. 🙂

btw, I did try a batting glove but the pads got in the way

thanks 🙂 I'm going to keep trying -- I'm certain I can get it much further if we go to the park (our yard is only about 30 yards wide)

hehehe, now that i know that she's a woman, the whole "mechanices of football throwing" bothers me a whole lot less.

Seriously how many american males need to be taught how to throw a football on an internet forum??

because Americans are silly? We play the other kind of football, too -- but thankfully no nails involved 😛
