If you liked the pen and paper Battletech, download Megamek and play against a friend.

I wish they'd make a Battletech MMORPG on an epic scale.

I'm totally blanking the name of the place now, though, and I'm kicking myself for it.

Virtual World in Pasadena :D Awesome place. There was one in Vegas, too.

That name doesn't sound right, but heck - it was a long, long time ago. At any rate it seems like the same sort of place.

The article was pretty right on - it was very pricey entertainment - each match was a few bucks and could be over in less than 5 minutes. Pricey, but VERY fun for the 'mech enthusiast. :)

The name still doesn't sound right, but heck - the photos show exactly the same decor I recall, so maybe it is. And jschmuck has said twice that it is, so how could he be wrong about one of my memories ;)

That was a helluva game.

Funny acting, but the mechs...

Haha, I'm sure I've dropped against you a few times in MPBT 3025. And yes that game was awesome. Shame it went under before release, but I don't fully blame EA. :( I was in KoTR or something like that...House Davion. We dropped against Liao a lot but my most memorable battles were with Kurita and WD.

I think I remember that unit.
My most memorable moment (I think I wrote it somewhere) was a 3v1 against kuritans.
2 Javelins and a Jenner, I thought "what the hell" and brought a Panther for a laugh.

1st Jenner, steady aim while retreating, accurate PPC fire to the torso. Finished him off with the SRM4.
2nd, a Javelin, I manage to hit him twice with the PPC then he closes the distance and we dance around eachother. The Panther is a slow mofo but it works if you go in reverse and torso-twist to the other side. Down he goes.
3rd guy, the other Javelin managed to get close without me hitting him. 2 PPC shots and he blasts my arm off. Running around wildly and using jumpjets I manage to kill him with my SRM4...
I told them it was a good fight and took a break as my hands were shaking.

Heheh nice, ya the Panther's PPC was certainly to be feared in knife fights (Light drops), but I still preferred the Jav with 4 ML for the big alpha and ability to chain fire. Its really hard to pinpoint which Mech I liked the most....I liked almost all of them really, HBK-4J, Catas, Enforcers and Centurions...Grasshoppers..... That's one area MPBT was much better than MW imo, the lethality and utility of all Mechs and weapons. No need to get into insane Clan OmniMechs with 40 pulse laser cheese to be lethal.

Dropping against the Devs and house designates in their Assaults was also a blast lol....going up against them in their 100-ton Atlas' with a lance of heavies was such a rush. Granted most of them sucked, but pimple popping those Atlas' was a blast nonetheless. :)

Here's a site I found with some SS.
A while back I also found the promo vids that one of the Devs had hosted, really brought back some memories. I know I had some SS as well from in-game but I know they're mostly gone or lost on some old HDD somewhere.

For those wondering, MC2 works just fine in Vista 32 :)

Someone needs to pick up and develop this franchise, stat.

Well yeah :D When you went, did you get some kind of "passport" type thing with your picture in it? They would scan that before you went into the room with all of the pods and that's how they kept track of your stats. At least, that's how I remember it.

Yep - didn't recall that until you mentioned it, but yes, it did. Too many beers between then & now, I guess :)

It is really a shame that no one has done a mechwarrior game with current technology. I remember playing a mech and it having absolutely horrible graphics, scenery , but it was still fun. I really think a game based on the old ideas could do well. I get so bored with current fps where I run around with a gun shooting people in the same old environments. Would be nice to fight with mechs where you could swap out parts, designs, etc.

Aye, that was fun. I think the inability to change loadouts was really a good move that prevented weapon boating.
It is funny how well I remember such an old game.

If there was ever a game suited to become a great MMORPG this would be it.

All the design of it is done. The level-up path, the professions, the game universe, the items and gear.

BUT it doesn't have elves or swords, I think that is straying to far from the path of WoW for most game makers today.

But this would be my dream game, provided they don't screw it up (I may be laughing but I'm really crying on the inside).

Mech3 really was brilliant. It's a shame it won't work under XP. You'd think being developed by Microsoft they'd ensure compatibility.

I remember it working on XP when I played it.

i loved mw2merc
i always wanted to play on the net, but i never could get it working cause I sucked at networking, I spent so many hours back in the day trying to get MW2M & C&C (original) working over dialup and stuff.

I agree, a Mech MMO would be awesome. I think it's definitely doable, but I feel it would compete more with EVE than WoW as it would be more similar IMHO. Mmm, a good EVE-esque Mech MMO.

Until that happens, the Crysis mod should to be really, really good.
I love the graphics, but I uninstalled the game twice already since it is quite boring. I'm not sure why, I usually like stealth FPS games.

I could get into a Mech MMO I think. Some kind of RvR type of thing or Corp VS Corp. Its main competitor probably would be Eve Online but that wouldnt bother me none. Probably wouldnt bother the Eve players either. I doubt the subscriber base would be WoW-like huge. More the size of Eve I would imagine. What Eve got 100k+?

Most I ever see on EVE at one time is 38-42k. I think total accounts is somewhere above 100k tho.

Yeah, I was thinking it was 80K when I tried it earlier this year. I heard its been growing steadily each year. I figured total might be 100k now but wasnt sure.

Meh, elves and swords are overrated.

As kids before we all wanted to be Gandalf we wanted to be a fire breathing gun toting GIANT ROBOT!
