If it were me I'd salvage the HD data files, destroy the HD, buy a new one, do a clean OS re-install and scan for keyloggers, viruses, spyware, etc.

This includes my newly recieved student loan.. about 6,000 dollars total is gone and my gift money from my grandparents.

I cancelled all my credit cards and debit cards, but I'm still in shock. The bank is going to do an investigation, but in the short term I've got absolutely no money, I also suspect that the person that did this had regular access to my computer and I have a suspect.

I'm supposed to be flying home tomorrow for a funeral and now I don't have any money for anything when I'm at home.

This is a joke and I feel like I'm gonna cry even though the money will be recovered at some point.. hopefully.

that can't be a pleasant experience. how will you get home?

I was able to use my dads points at this late of a date because it's a bereavement case.

I'm more worried about being able to buy food and stuff over the next day or two.

I've been in murky financial waters for the past month or two, this just kills me.

check your comp for a keylogger, unless you keep all your info on the comp in like a txt file thats one way thet could have gotten the info

Someone didn't read the thread 😉

yea i missed that

anyway you should be able to trace the keylogger now that you know its there, someone got one on a friends comp and just to f with his email, sent email from his account to people like ex gfs and such, somehow they figured out how to trace it and found where it was going

Few questions:

You say the perp has access, I assume you mean physical access and not over the net? How? Who was this person that you let them use your computer?

And how do you check for a keylogger if you suspect one is present?

Damn RyanSengara, that sucks! 🙁 IIRC you should file a police report as well.

On da fone with them now.

I'm gonna have to take out a loan from the family company without my dad knowing in order to get by for the next couple of weeks until this is resolved.

The asshole put a keylogger on my machine and thats how he got all my passwords.

Including ATOT, :Q!

that's why you get something really cool, it stops things like that from happening. It's called a Firewall.
please understand what you are talking about before you try to be condescending

Word.

A firewall wouldn't do an ounce of good in this case.

Yikes! Couldn't you just tell your Dad what's happening?

No. Definately not an option.

Done and done, reformatted it last night.

i didnt read the rest of the thread, so im not sure if this was answered before.

did they use your debit card number? if so the process is not that painful. most banks usually refund you the money within 5 business days and they investigate upto 2 months.

most of the banks that i worked did this. i had someone use my debit card in mexico and i got the money back same day

He had physical access, he used to be a friend of mine. He knows I'm kinda well off and the guy is kinda shady, I really shoulda seen this one coming. This keylog datafile (the text file) was created over 2 months ago.

I checked for a keylogged simply by searching *.txt, I don't use text files so the only ones that should be there are ones created by programs I've installed.

I painstakingly dredged through all of them.

This one is a bit prickly as I've had some issues with the bank, they are a little bit of a smaller outfit and tend to take longer than the other banks I've had.

They said it could take up to 10 business days (2 weeks).. the investigation will last longer than that.

Summarily since I know the perp, they aren't anxious to refund the money incase I'm running some sort of scam.

So if you're behind a firewall is this mostly preventable from happening over the net?

Yeah because data won't be able to be sent from the keylogger, or retrieved by the other person by means of remote desktop.. etc etc.

Yeap. Gave them all the pertinent info. I'm honestly just worried about how I'm gonna put food on the table for the next 2 weeks.

wow man sorry to hear that 🙁

best of luck to you! this makes me all paranoid now about who i let use my computer

Is the loan you mentioned taking from the family company not an option?

If anyone found out it would ruffle a few feathers.

I wish there was an alternative, to be honest with you I'm afraid to ask.

The aformentioned money was supposed to be used to pay my tuition, which is due soon so it would have to be a fairly large loan.. which would be hard to hide.

So basically you're going to steal money from your family temporarily rather than telling them this happened? 😕
