Iamwiz com on now the only thing 35's belong on is Internationals.

you're gonna need at least 5.5" to get 35s on a cherokee. this guy has 35s on his xj, with 5.5" of lift, a ton of cutting and bushwhacker flares. he's able to stuff the tires with no rubbing.

even with 31s that's gotta be more than a 2" lift. i'm still guessing 3 inches. if you want good info on xjs or jeeps in general jeepforum.com is a good place to go. jeeps unlimited is okay as well.
