car was having problems (really low gas mileage and rough idle)...took it twice to the dealer i bought the car from (over 3 months)...they kept on telling me its normal cuz of the winter. but i had my doubts that they are shafting me. had a feeling that they knew what was wrong but didnt wanna fix it cuz my car's under warranty and the cost would come out of their pockets.

got fed up when my car stalled after a cold start...took it to another dealer who didnt know my car was under warranty. they checked it out and told me with a grin that i need a new throttle body...worth $875. i told them "ok great...go ahead and do the repairs/replace the part but i want it all for free cuz my car's a certified used car and its still under warranty".

the grin ran away from his face but he was nice enuff to do the repairs within a day. i got something worth a lot....for free :D

BTW. REYDEL VW service sucks. Hamilton VW's service is a LOT better!!!

I think Honda ones run more then $500. Sucks when you break the TPS since they don't sell those seperately, only with the TB.

im guessing the part costs around 300 or so. the rest is labor charges. which doesnt shock me considering its a dealership and an euro one at that

you should complain, they should have fixed it at the original dealer.

the cost doesn't come out of the dealer but the manufacturer. dealers love doing warranty work...no headaches about payment.

hmm i dunno. cuz i took it to my dealer (reydel) 3 times. first time they did a throttle body cleaning. that helped for a bit but then the problem resurfaced after 2 months or so. took it back to them.....was a pain in the @$$ cuz i had to take a day off work since they dont do any service work on weekends...and they told me its all fine even though it happened again when i took my car back. if the part needed replacing reydel VW should have replaced it when i took it there the first time

$500 isn't totally out of line as I can get an aftermarket one for my Firebird for about $400. But $875, damn.

Dealers HATE warranty work....the labor paid for warranty work is way below what the dealership charges per hour to customers.....it's a fixed fee the manufacturer sets for the work and usually doesn't even come close to paying hte mechanic for the work, much less leaving any sort of profit margin for the dealer. The manufacturer's are also known to be chronically slow at paying off labor to dealers for warranty work.

Thankfully I just got rid of our VW. The dealership called the otherday, the same one that got scammed out of the $120K BMW, and I got the pleasure of telling him it was gone and we bought a 99 Accord EX Coupe.
