I need to get an enclosure, how big of a difference is there between an MDF box and particle board? Prices are about the same for both, but I can get a pb box locally where as I have to order an MDF box online. Is MDF really that much better than particle board?

ed; it's for my car, single 12.

MDF makes ALL the difference. I would NEVER build a sub box w/out it.

Order it?? You can get it at home depot or lowes

K, so you've tried it both ways and MDF just sounds better?

Not building my own box, takes too much time. I'll probably just order it at ikesound.com.

I wonder why QLogic builds all of their boxes out of particle board though. Must just be because its cheaper.

MDF is much more resiliant to vibration than particle board....and vibrations basically "eat up" all the bass that you try to so hard to produce.

Yes, i've built speaker boxes out of both and yes MDF is the way to go in my opinion.

yep, you *can* build them out of particle board, but if you want to do it right, then spend a little extra.

It's alot cheaper, I visited home depot and for boards of similar sizes and thicknesses, MDF is twice the price as particle board.

I agree that MDF is a lot better. Though, if you decide to make your own box, wear a mask when you cut it. MDF gets really dusty when you cut it, and I can't imagine the dust is good for your lungs.

K thx. I mean i hear left and right that PB sucks ass, but I never hear they've tried it both ways and that MDF is that much better.

It's nicer to work with too. Easier to control breakage, cuts, drilling. Plus it's denser, so like he said, it doesn't vibrate as much. It also holds screws a lot tighter.

MDF is a much densor material to work with. The density will prevent loss from vibration. There is a difference to warant using the better material.
