MCP Certification?

I need to become a Microsoft Certified Professional for a job at a data storage facility and thought I ask you all what you would recomend for a fairly quick completion of the certification.

There are a couple sites that will sell a training kit (anywhere from $1200-$1400), but I was thinking it might be less expensive to buy some books and study myself.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

The IT lead said XP professional. He also said I should have some knowledge about VPNs, Server 2003, active directories.

Well, you can take the 70-270: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional exam, which is relatively easy if you have any XP support experience. I'd recommend just getting the self study guide from MS, as I was able to take it after just reading through the book (although I had a few years of support experience).

Another option would be to take the 70:271 and 272 exams, and get your Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician certification. Again, not that difficult to get in a short amount of time with the self study books.

Lastly, if you want 2003 experience, look into the 2003 exams for 70:290,291, or 293, all of which would be good.

The XP cert alone should be fairly easy if you've ever done any support of XP.

Have you spoken to your employer about their desires for you?

I've not done any XP support. Right now I'm a game cafe/pc repair sales owner. Microsoft just built the largest data center in the world in our tiny town of Quincy, WA-1million SQF of computers 🙂

They're hiring and this is what I was told I needed by the lead IT staffer.

Thanks

Go to Microsoft Press and get the MCE kit of books. Should be like $150 IIRC. It also comes with a coupon for the tests. There should be four books and each one corresponds to a cert test. Pick one and take the test, but all four books are good for references. I have the old 2000 MCE set and even though I only took 2 of the tests (painfully easy) they are great references for looking stuff up.
