It makes me sicker and sicker every time I read about a player who's character (if not skills, in McGriff's case -- he'll probably be the only 500HR hitter who won't be in the HOF) I admire who wants to go to the Yankees (i.e. Randy Johnson will "only be traded to NYY")

:disgust:

I'm sure you'd turn down millions of dollars because of your "integrity".
(As if being signed by the Yankees somehow compromises one's "integrity".)

Of course I can't say that I would turn down millions of dollars because of my "integrity" but I'd like to think that after years and years of making millions of dollarsm (in the case of Randy Johnson particularly, and to a certain extent Fred McGriff) the opportunity to be paid a few million more but compromise my integrity (which waiving a No-Trade to be traded to NYY or signing with NYY as a free agent or released player DOES DO) would be something I would decline.

Nah the more money you have the more money you want. Plus people have too much pride for themselves.

That's easy for you to say, from the outside looking in. You're not in that position.
Also, it's possible that they don't share your idea of what constitutes integrity. Perhaps they (gasp) think for themselves, and do what they want to with their own lives?

Quite likely they do but when they're ruining a national pastime I think I have every right to be angry about it. And no, I'm not in that exact position, but that doesn't prevent me from making an informed decision. I hope you're not arguing the point that the majority of professional atheletes are extremely greedy (see: Carlos Boozer)

I think some are greedy and some are not, just like any other group of people in society. You can be angry, sure, but it's hard to assume that you or I would do any different if we were in their shoes.

Unless I got drafted by the Yankees or I still had a passion to play the game and no one else would take but there's no way in hell I would join them. That is, if they continue to spend like they are. I'd rather go to an underdog and help them. Guess that's just my personality.

People certainly don't turn down paycuts to go to contenders!

Interesting how you seem to know me better than I do.

When Tampa releases you, you know you have to be not playing well.
He's still waiting for test results. But there are rumors that it may even be a life-threatening ailment.

Wow. Is it possible that it's related to steroid use? Again, it's a stretch, but I know the rumors of him being on the roids were rampant when he came back much smaller than before during spring training, coincidentally at a time when they were looking at steroid use in baseball. I don't know all the side effects of steroids, but it's almost too coincidental that he's having all these health problems now.

I don't know you at all, but I do know (well make a safe assumption) that you're not in the position to earn millions of dollars. You have no idea what you'd do until you are in those shoes.

I've heard the same, but add to it 'if not treated early,' like I'm guessing in third world countries.

I think McGriff needs to go somewhere where he knows he'll have a solid job, maybe a non contender... All he needs is 7 more I think.

Well considering Tampa is 3rd in the AL east with the Yankees and the Red Sox I'd say that while that last statement last year would have been laughably true, this year I don't think it applies...

Second, it's life threatening if he does in fact have it and it goes untreated. With medication his chances of survival are over 90%. 10% is still a lot, but the way most people talked about it it was like he had an untreatable disease.

How can you say that? They don't even know what it is! They thought it was an intestinal parasite, but it wasn't responding properly to treatment.
i remember they were talking about it on sportscenter, where whoever was being interviewed said the "fatal parasite" that they were testing for was treatable. Now if it's something else, and they don't know what it is, then the whole "fatal" part goes away temperarily. If it turns out to be something different and even more fatal, then that really sucks, but the thing everyone was scared about had a 90%+ chance of being treated
