McGriff works out for Yankees

Three days after his release from Tampa Bay, Fred McGriff worked out Wednesday for the New York Yankees, the team that launched his career 23 years ago.

The Devil Rays designated the 40-year-old first baseman for assignment on July 17 after he hit .181 with two homers and seven RBIs in 27 games. Seven homers shy of 500, McGriff is eager for another chance to reach the milestone this season.

"I hope so," said McGriff, who also worked out for the team on Tuesday. "We'll see. I'm just working out, taking ground balls and hitting a little bit."

McGriff was taken in the 1981 amateur draft by the Yankees, but was traded to Toronto the following year. Now it appears his career has taken him full circle.

"It would be awesome," said McGriff about the possibility of joining the Yankees. "You couldn't ask for anything better."

McGriff took batting practice and grounders in front of team officials at the Yankees' minor league complex. New York, the AL East Division leader, could be in the market for an extra first baseman depending on test results regarding ailing starter Jason Giambi.

Giambi has felt fatigued since early June because of an intestinal parasite. Yankees manager Joe Torre has said the team will know more about Giambi's status later this week.

Tony Clark has started at first in place of Giambi, who left the team for additional tests Monday night.

McGriff signed a minor league contract with Tampa Bay in February, hoping to show enough during spring training that a major league team would give him an opportunity to continue his quest for 500.

McGriff didn't begin the season with the Devil Rays, but joined them on May 28 for his second stint with the team.

"You always got to prove yourself everyday," McGriff said. "For 18 years I've had to prove myself, so it's no different."

Just what we need, more hitting and the same amount of starting pitching (ie. f*cking NONE) :disgust:

true. I actually hope he gets with them and wins (unless the cubs are in it that is). McGriff is a nice guy.

Giambi really must have something thats going to take him out for a long while. Because McGriff was dropped by Tampa.
When Tampa releases you, you know you have to be not playing well.

He's still waiting for test results. But there are rumors that it may even be a life-threatening ailment.

I'm hoping it's just a rumor.

lol, that's when you've hit rock bottom and time to call it a career.
I think if McGriff joins the Yanks, the teams average age jumps to 73.4

Isn't that 50 year old Julio Franco playing for the Braves? If Julio can still do it I'm sure McGriff can give some production.

That's what happens when you join the evil empire. IMO tony clark is having an amazing season (esp for his age, if they get mcgriff they are going to have 2 old first basemen) and is qualified for starting at 1st.

two things. To the person that laugheda bout the crime dog, you know that's his real nickname right? Because you made it sound like you didn't heh

Second, it's life threatening if he does in fact have it and it goes untreated. With medication his chances of survival are over 90%. 10% is still a lot, but the way most people talked about it it was like he had an untreatable disease.

How can you say that? They don't even know what it is! They thought it was an intestinal parasite, but it wasn't responding properly to treatment.

I think hes a little old.

Also aren't there rumors of possibly bring back Tino Martinez? I believe I heard that somewhere.

Isn't a tad strange that whatever Giambi has... his wife and Kevin Brown have some form of it also?

Is there any player in baseball who will stand up for their integrity and NOT sign or be traded to the Yankees? It makes me sicker and sicker every time I read about a player who's character (if not skills, in McGriff's case -- he'll probably be the only 500HR hitter who won't be in the HOF) I admire who wants to go to the Yankees (i.e. Randy Johnson will "only be traded to NYY")

:disgust:

I'm sure you'd turn down millions of dollars because of your "integrity".
(As if being signed by the Yankees somehow compromises one's "integrity".)

Of course I can't say that I would turn down millions of dollars because of my "integrity" but I'd like to think that after years and years of making millions of dollarsm (in the case of Randy Johnson particularly, and to a certain extent Fred McGriff) the opportunity to be paid a few million more but compromise my integrity (which waiving a No-Trade to be traded to NYY or signing with NYY as a free agent or released player DOES DO) would be something I would decline.
