MCE 2k5 Install..MUP.SYS error

First of all, system:

Gigabyte GA7VRXP Ver 2
Athlon XP 1900+
1x256 MB PC2700 DDR (generic)
1x512 MB Crucial PC2700 DDR
2x Hitachi (IBM Deskstar replacments) 80 gb 7200 RPM drive in raid 0
Raid controller is onboard (Promise Fasttrak)
Winfast TV2000XP Capture Card
Onboard Realtek NIC
Onboard Sound
Asus GForce 4 ti 4200

Software: CD 1 of MCD2k5 downloaded ISO from MSDN site, CD2 from the MSDN library (CD MS sent). CD1 has been modified, with my raid drivers slipstreamed in (same slipstream settings for an XP Pro disk that is working fine).

Install, it asks for disk 2, then asks for "XP Service Pack 2" CD, Put 1 in, and it goes again. Gets to final reboot, quick flash of bluescreen and rebooting. Won't boot. Tried safemode, but it dies on MUP.SYS. Pulled Capture card, generic stick of ram, disabled all USB, tweaked about every bios setting I could find, no change. Reinstall with new bios settings and missing hardware, no change. So my slipstreamed XP Pro (just to make sure it's working) works fine (posting from it now). All of this hardware is tried and true (running XP for 2 years now). Any ideas? I think it might be the downloaded ISO is different then the shipped one. Going to download CD2 tomorrow and try again, or grab the disk one and reslipstream. May actually drag a floppy out and try the old F6 method, but I would have to find one at work (I gave them all to work when I retired my floppy methods).

Raid drivers are the latest, others I don't think I can slipstream in easily (vid card, etc).


Any ideas?

I really don't know what's your problem, but I have seen mup.sys fail on other computers. I don't even know what it's used for.

I'd also like to make a quick observation on your hardware: The Ti4200 is "good enough" for MCE05, but if I were you, I'd dump it and grab a cheap FX5200. I run a Ti4600 and the MCE gui does some weird things sometimes. Things like, black screen during video playback, and if I alt-tab I get video back, and the GUI seems to be sluggish sometimes. MCE05 really doesn't like non-DX9 cards very much.

Guys, MUP.sys is simply the last driver that appears in the list. It means that everything that is being logged there has completed.

What you really need to do is get that bluescreen to show. Without knowing the actual error this is going to be difficult to troubleshoot.

If you are doing a parallel install you can disable the automatic reboot with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl!Autoreboot=0

You can also look in your minidump folder to see if you have any dumps. If so, PM me and I'll take a look at them. Another "first thing to do" would be try the install with normal media and an F6 floppy.

Don't want to drag the floppy out unless I have to, but I will soon. I am going to get consistant on my media, though. Grab the disk 1 from my MSDN library and then slip raid drivers into it, and also download disc 2, so I have the downloaded version and the disc version. Next thing I am going to try (and I can do this without slipping drivers in) is to move one drive to my normal IDE controller and install there. I might try and get a card, but I was trying to opt out of that. (I'm cheap, don't really want a new card, as I stopped gaming and this card does all I need). This is just a trial run of MCE2005, to see if I want to build myself a box for the living room. This should be OK for a week or 2 trial, then if I am going to keep it, I'll pop for a video card while I buy the disks (can't use MSDN for normal use, or you shouldn't anyway).

The card will run fine for a trial to see if MCE works for you, but trust me on this, it more likely then not you will have problems. An FX5200 can be had for like $40, and doesn't really have much gaming ability anyway. It's not like I'm telling you to go out and get a pair of 6800 Ultras just for the MCE gui

As an update....I tried multiple things, including-Matching disks (MSDN Download vs MSDN Library CD's) Slipstreamed drivers vs regular (dug out the old floppy, what a pain), multiple drivers on setup (Original shipping, latestest, and one in between), and finally moving one drive to the regular controller and disabling the raid controller. Which worked, sorta. You were right, that card will suck for MCE (not that I didn't believe you), and my capture card isn't supported (Leadtek Winfast TV2000XP) so it was all for naught. Back to XP Pro....

I will comment that the GUI was very nice. My next wild adventure is to try MythTV. Problem with that is I can't use my main box, my wife will freak. I am going to use an old P3500 system, loaded up with as much ram as it will take, a Gforce 3 and the Leadtek TV Tuner card. Going to ask for suggestions for a distro as I make another thread about my MYTH TV Experience.

Overall, considering my H/W problems, I would still recemend the MCE, as it seemed like once you had it running, it would be nice. Just don't try to use you older hardware.

Yes, MCE 2005 is very nice for what 85% of us will do with a computer in the family room and a bit more than joe 6 pack will ever need.

I quite enjoy using it, as I switched from BeyondTV quite a while back. It does have hardware specific needs, but once it is setup, it is a very functional and capable OS.
