VIDEO ERROR...
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer

I installed the nVidia DVD decoder, but each time I start the media center I get a warning about my video card. I have a Matrox G550 which clearly isn't on MS's list of supported hardware, but is that why I have the error noted up top?

Video card most probable! MCE2005 is very specific about the video hardware.

MCE05 really doesn't work very well on anything except DX9-level hardware. Radeon 96/97/98/x800s, geforce fx5x00/6x00s are best for it.

Yep, like doesn't work at all, if it's just for HTPC stuff i'd get a cheap radeon 9600... well that's what I did anyway, works like a charm.

I've posted about 2 reported errors I've received from MCE 2005.

1. the first error is more of a warning where as soon as I click on the Media Center I'm told the following from a pop-up:
Your video card or drivers are not compatible with Media Center.
Once I close this window Media Center opens anyway.
2. the second error message could be cause by the same reason as the first or not. It says:
VIDEO ERROR
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer.
I'm going to try to snag a new video card tomorrow at a grand opening and hopefully that will solve the problem. Poor performance is not my concern, but no performance is. I can always upgrade for poor performance.

Oddly, I swapped out the Matrox for a PNY Ti4200 w/ 64MB and it ran. I think it could have run better, but it did run.

Probably because ti4200, a DX8 card has limited VMR9 support (IIRC is the default(only?) video rendering mode for MCE) where the Matrox card probably has no VMR9 support at all. You stll probably want to upgrade to DX9 hardware for best results.
