McDonald's Corp. will soon start offering free wireless Internet access at its U.S. restaurants as part of the fast-food chain's transformation from its hamburger roots into a hang-out destination.

Starting in mid-January, McDonald's will lift a $2.95 fee that it had charged customers for two hours of wireless Internet access, available at about 11,000 of its 14,000 domestic locations, McDonald's USA Chief Information Officer David Grooms said in an interview.

The free access comes under a partnership with AT&T Inc., which provides McDonald's stores with wireless Internet. Mr. Grooms wouldn't discuss financial details ...

What is it with the flying pig and always being the late night "First"er? Not to mention it is usually some douche bag comment and then "everyone knows this".

They used to have free cards that were promos for like a free 2 hour session or something. All you needed to do was ask the register kids and they'd give you a stack. Cool that they are going completely free. There has def been times I was on the road in the middle of nowhere and would have loved to get some quick wifi for something or another.

I have made it my mission in life to do this. I post no matter what I am doing. You see, I love this forum, and the people on it. I try my best to do two things with my posts: educate and entertain. That is my purpose. That is why I was born. Everyone knows this.

Then his second post is usually something chuckle worthy or maybe even smartly ironic. It is the perfect defense as it makes him seem less like a huge douche bag, yet at the same time he can sneak in more snide remarks and of course his favorite phrase. It might just be some of the best trolling this forums has. Everyone Knows this.

Btw, WWYBYWB?

I've said this for awhile, TFP is definitely my favorite troll. Although I do miss CasioTech.

That's pretty stupid. I know a guy who owns a couple and he can't get customers out fast enough now. Cheap junk food + poor fatties + bad economy = packed. Why add to time they linger? There is someone here who owns a franchise too wouldn't mind hearing their thoughts.

Wonder if Jack In The Box will be doing this?

I'd be downing Ultimate Cheese Burgers and Shakes all the time though........ Damn it........ Maybe not a good idea....

They have been offering free WiFi in the UK for years. Never seen anyone bust out a laptop there, however. I would personally seek out a Starbucks or similar. Still a much nicer environment.

I think they should have stayed with the paid system. Even if it were only a quarter for the whole day, I suspect most folks would not even bother.
But free wifi means people can just stop by and not even have to talk to the cashier.
Why dont I like this? It will turn McD's into a hangout where kids go for free water and internet and clog up the store, getting in the way of real customers. One of the reasons I liked McDonalds being shitty and smelly was it kept people from hanging out. They did their business and moved the fuck on. (At least at all the joints I've seen.)

are they hurting for business? I mean they have a good $1 menu and it seems like they are just trying to get people into the stores to buy any little thing...

Isn't that the point of owning a store regardless of current success? To get customers in the door.
I usually go there to do some studying as the public libraries have horrible times they are open on the weekend.

Getting a $1.00 small soda and free refills as well as a quiet place away from my 3 kids to study keeps me happy.

Small business, definitely... I'm not sure about a national fast food chain already making money because of their product alone. Why give this free access / free refills away when they aren't hurting for it?

Mostly product differentiation. Given most of the products are fairly equal between fast food places, the word "free" is enough to get more in the door. I would disagree with a national chain not thinking they need to make some changes to get people in the door. Sure they have brand recognition, but if this gets a couple of people off the fence, people who wouldn't ordinarily go there, it is a win. The complacent businessman is usually the one who loses.

McD has been thriving lately (look up their recent qtrly reports and filings)

The primary reason behind this is their lining themselves up as a direct competitor to Starbucks. Remember, consumers buy "benefits", not products / services. The stance that McD is taking is kinda like "whatever you benefits you get at Starbucks, you can get at McD - only cheaper".

First, Starbucks improved their food menu selection - taking a pot shot at fast food places
Then, McD introduced it's premium coffee, aimed at grabbing some of Starbucks and Dunkin's market share
Now this ... should get interesting 😀

Smart move by McD
