The Hill: Bernie Sanders hits McConnell for saying DC, Puerto Rico statehood is 'full-bore socialism' | TheHill.

Pretty much anything republican obstuctionist "grim reaper" doesn't agree with is "socialism".

McConnells legacy is dismantling democracy, obstructionism, and tax cuts for the weatlhy paid for by the middle class. McConnell, the man who loathes America.

Mitch is, by far, the worst person in power in this country. Trump, meh.

Yup, McConnell (and Ryan *was*) is perfectly content to let the giant-american-stereotype-in-chief run interference while they do whatever they want and spin it to the max with their alt-facts.

We shouldn’t even consider Puerto Rico for statehood unless and until they pay their defaulted government debts in full. Which means it will never happen. There's no reason to reward acknowledged deadbeats with statehood, especially since if they do gain statehood that debt will be completely unrecoverable.

The next time the Democrats have a governing trifecta they should absolutely make DC and Puerto Rico states. This is a no-brainer.

It won’t happen before then though because Republicans don’t want to lose senate power. If they thought it would be to their advantage they would do it in a second.

If you do then GOP should force a vote that affirms Puerto Rico default to creditors and pensioners was approved by Congress in allowing statehood. They'll fit right in with the other blue states and cities like Chicago that underfund pensions and such and eventually fvck people over, they're the perfect blue state.

Puerto Rico statehood was part of the GOP platform just a couple years ago. Given the political bent of the island it was not at all inconceivable that they could send R senators to DC. Those R senators may not look or vote exactly like a evangelical bible thumper from Asscrack, AL but they generally would have sided with the GOP on many issues. Trump has probably altered that dynamic somewhat though.

I'd also invite all the island territories.

Sure, do whatever symbolic votes you want. I don’t care.

Remember, those cities and blue states fund the red states and red areas, not the other way around.

I'd have no problem fucking over the hedge funds that have leveraged the island's status against it.

But whataboutism that blue state taxes go disproportionately to red states.

Not surprised by either of you. Running up debt you don't intend to pay and being happy about screwing over those who lent it to you is part of the core progressive identity nowadays.

I doubt they would send Republican senators, at least ones that had any similarity to the rest of the Republicans. Their political parties don’t exactly align to the mainland ones but I bet whoever they elected would caucus with the Democrats.

Maybe liberal areas should turn the money they give to conservative areas into loans instead of gifts. I bet that would help pay off those debts!

I always find it funny how the conservative areas who depend on liberal areas for support feel that they can lecture on fiscal responsibility.

PR is a vicim of essentially predatory lending because of federal law and a lack of federal financial support that a state would have enjoyed. So no, hose the bondholders.

I think that was more of an open question. Some GOP pols have had some moderate success in courting the PR vote, FL comes to mind. Now that Trump demonizes the island at every opportunity I'd expect that to be a harder job on the island itself.

From the GOP- the party that just gave the rich a massive tax cut and ran up the debt to do it. lol. You’ve no ground to stand, fucking loon.

In the 2016 election Puerto Ricans in Florida overwhelmingly supported Clinton and that was before Trump's disastrous Puerto Rico hurricane response.

Hahaha running up debt, what exactly is happening now with debt?

Now back to the subject, PR & DC continually get shit on because they effectively don’t have representation if I lived in either place I’d want representation. They both manage poorly but again what do they have in common, no representation. I suspect they’d be better managed if that changed.

I see you’ve climbed down from your guard tower long enough to shit on a different group of poor people.

Status as part of the federal government should work like the Premier League with relegation if you’re a mismanaged mess like PR, DC, or Chicago. They can be put into a junior varsity league for the U.S. with a path to full statehood if they shape up or demotion if they underfund pension obligations or something. They get conditional representation in Congress where they are prevented in voting on items that would benefit themselves.

^ This is why we should never elect Randian fascists to anything.
