Accepting the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, Mr. McCartney used the occasion to applaud President Obama. “Getting this prize would be good enough,” Mr. McCartney said. “But getting it from this president ...” He smiled.

Shouldn't Obama be spending his time, I don't know maybe, fixing the economy instead of attending a party for some random British dude? We're at 10% unemployment here. Those 10% are worrying about paying their bills while Obama and Congress party it up in the east wing. Obama can't resist missing a photo op can he? Outrageous!

It`s blooming idiots like you that have no clue!!

In fact it is outrageous for moronic idiots lkike you to honestly think that Obama should get no sleep or do nothing else except try to fix the problems he inherited.

The president has people who are working on the issues that you think are important....

Your one of these idiots who if it was reprorted that Obama has sex with his wife every night for several hours you would be whining and crying about that too.

Every post you make it is quite obvious you are one of the 12 year olds who frequent these forums...sad and pathetic!!

LOL it's funny to see a thread with the OP posted the wrong name (out of ignorance) and then he never comes back again because the subsequent repliers have him feel idiotic.

You're a moron if you think the President doesn't wear many hats.

Do you think there is some job machine that he has to crank the handle on and he's goofing off?

I swear that some of you people seem to think the President is alone in the White House with all of the buttons and levers to run the country and if he's not pushing your favorite button at any given time, he's derelict in his duty.

Exactly... obama is smart enough to have others negotiate his back room deals. Frees up a lot of his time.

Disclaimer: I like Paul McCartney's music.

I think the real issue here is that the government is giving away medals...for music. How is this a legitimate function of government?

There are numerous private organizations that give awards for this kind of thing. Why does government feel that it has to get involved at all? Guess they don't have anything better to do.

How do I nominate NWA for the next award?

Music is part of the "Arts", and recognized by sophisticated societies as an important part of culture. Perhaps you would prefer a less sophisticated one, say like Saudi Arabia.

Our government is not alone here. McCartney was knighted for his contributions by the British.

It is a legitimate function of the Library of Congress who gives out the Gershwin Prize. Government is not all about taxes and war, they do have a duty to protect knowledge and history. This award is an extension of that.

From the point of view of children these days, I suppose Paul McCartney really is just "some random British dude"...

Exactly! Let private institutions like the academy awards and the golden globes give out these medals. The White House should not be an extension of Hollywood.

Calling the White House "an extension of Hollywood" in this instance is asinine.

You really don't get this culture thing do you?

The federal government has a long history of recognizing significant achievement in many fields and has had the support of most citizens for doing so.

You represent an insignificant minority.

I would prefer a less pervasive government. Sophistication is in the eye of the beholder.

Where does the role of government end? Why stop with art? Perhaps government should also give awards to whomever can eat the most hot dogs in 5 minutes?

Were you this upset when they gave out these medals under Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, etc?

No, just under Bush, Clinton, and Bush. I did not form my theories on the proper role of government until after the Reagan years.

Why don't you answer my question instead of trying to pigeonhole me as a partisan hack?

My thoughts exactly, although after decades of this stuff it's hard for me to get bothered. Hell, all those government people at that event could have been out really screwing up something. This is probably a cheap night for the federal government, we got off light! Since Obama has no experience creating jobs or meeting a budget or stopping an oil leak, I'd much rather he simply assign people who do (hopefully) know something about those things and spend his time giving out awards, even if I fundamentally disagree with their existence, rather than micromanaging those people and events.

I was disappointed though when I read this and realized that ol' Tailgunner wasn't being honored.

In the interest of furthering your education, I would point out even fans of hot dog eating contests do not consider it to be sophisticated or an art form. National recognition is not generally offered for trivial pursuits.

If u want to do outrageous, focus outrageous where it belongs.
I find it pathetic people like Palin, Governor Bobby Jindal and so many other republicans
"NOW" attack Obama and democrats over things like the oil spill mess.
When it was all those listed above that, not so long ago, stood with smirked face
chanting DRILL BABY DRILL.
I don't blame BP. I don't blame the US gov. I don't blame Obama.
I blame anyone who joined in chanting DRILL BABY DRILL.
BP was simply giving us what we demanded... Cheap gas prices.
As usual, republicans and GW screwed things up. Now republicans
insist on passing the buck when it comes to the blame.
It was not the democrats that stood there chanting...
This... remember... is what you get when you vote stupid,
as so many did in 2000 and again in 2004.
You wanted a "pretend" shoot from the hip good ole boy cowboy to run the country?
Well... here is the other side of that coin. Live with it. You own it !!!!

I never claimed that hot dog eating contests were sophisticated or an art form. I used an extreme example to illustrate the folly of allowing government to involve itself in things that it has no legitimate interest in. Since you apparently did not recognize this, I am providing this simple explanation for you.

Where does the role of government end? Based on your posts in other threads, you and I have very different opinions. We can agree to disagree and I'll leave it at that.

Wow. You blame not the people who cut corners, not the people who established the oversight and then did not do any actual oversight, but the people who recognize that we are using huge amounts of oil and thus need to produce more oil. And yet you put forth no alternatives, not even the weakest liberal platitudes usually put forth about alternative energy and conservation. Thou art a moron of the first water and thy "logic" is no more than the usual party attacks on the opposition, even to the point of blaming Bush. Even a liberal ideologue should be able to be more than a shallow caricature.
