What we really need is some realistic laws and procedures so that we can protect privacy and try to insure security. I dont think I should have to pay for commercial sized downloads and game servers because people are too cheap to purchase a commercial license. We need common sense and a way to identify perpetrators on the Internet. I think an ISP should be able to block nuisence traffic on their own network.

Contrary to popular belief the Internet is mostly a connection of privately owned networks.

The laws are already standing, and in use. Did you forget about The Patriot Act? Just more fear mongering to make more money.

The system was changed when too many flocked to running p2p filesharing applications 24/7.

It would be terrible if we had a robust network infrastructure that can handle the issues of the future such as more file transfers wouldn't it?

I think that illegal P2P is going to slowly become a smaller percentage as more and more people demand HD content and computers become even further cemented as the backbone of daily productivity.

"I am a illiterate that has to rely on my wife for all the assistance I can get," McCain said. In a computer-dominated world, McCain's professed computer ignorance may raise questions again about his age. At 71, he is seeking to become the oldest person ever elected president of the United States.

I can't believe this fucking idiot is drafting a bill like this.

so then, only people with knowledge of the banking industry should be in charge of banking related procedure? aka, the only people should be from GS, etc...???

Waiting an answer to your retarded rebuttle? I'm not asking McCain to get his CCNA before he starts writing bills related to the internet, i'm asking McCain to LEARN HOW TO FUCKING USE A COMPUTER. How the hell is that even analogous to needing to be a banker to oversee the banking industry? Computer literacy is a basic fucking skill like driving a car or knowing how to read these days.

This country will be DAMNED if the party of "a series of tubes" has a say in how our internet should work.

What's really funny is it is a series of tubes and yet you don't understand how The Internet works. I've been building, engineering, architecthing The Internet for 15 years. It's funny you still don't know how it works.

The tubes thing is how we tell lay people how it works because it's a valid analogy they can wrap their wittle minds around.

To those of you who complains about p2p being a valid argument against net neutrality, why doesn't the government make companies impose bandwidth limits (depending on how much one pays) for download vs. upload? Problem solved.

Actually, what's fucking hilarious is that you're a network engineer and you got COMPLETELY EMBARRASSED in the TWC debate.

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/04/time-warner-cab/

For 2008, the most recent period available, Time Warner Cable reported that its high-speed data costs actually declined by 12 percent to $146 million. Meanwhile subscribers increased by more than 10 percent to 8.4 million, and high-speed data revenues climbed to more than $4 billion.

Seriously, how is it possible for YOU to have so much experience in network engineering but not know a god damn thing about how much it all costs?

edit: oh and from the TWC thread, this is the perfect response:

Your response to this was a silly remark such as "go with someone else." When they told you that their only decent option was Time Warner, rather than taking off those rose-colored glasses of yours, you told them to buy a dedicated line!

You ought to run for office, spidey, because you sure are good at ignoring the actual issue.

Great, let's take an industry that is already anti-competition and let them squeeze providers AND users to make even more cash.

Sites like Youtube, Hulu...if they had to pay extra and you had to pay extra to use them, probably wouldn't of been able to get off the ground. Without Net Neutrality the internet will stagnate.

Summary: Net Neutrality means keeping the internet operating on the same principles on which it was founded. This is why people such as Vint Cerf (the "father of the internet"), Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the web) and any company that delivers its services of the net (Google, Amazon, Ebay etc) support it. ISPs find these principles unprofitable, so they wish to make the internet more like the old cable and wireless networks, where carriers/operators ruled their domain.

If you like the internet the way it is, support Net Neutrality. If you think the wireless networks of the late 90s or the cable networks of the 80s are a better model, then oppose it.

If this lowers my ping in Left 4 Dead I'm all for it.

J/K.

Someone needs to explain net neutrality to me, and what this bill would do. I can't imagine a bill saying "It's completely illegal to ever institute regulation on internet usage, ever, no matter what happens" as being sound policy.

I still find it hilarious that you think these Cable companies are so cash strapped that they can't upgrade their networks to accommodate higher bandwidth applications WITH or WITHOUT net neutrality. And this relates to the TWC argument because YOU thought poor little TWC HAD to impose those ridiculous bandwidth caps because they were getting soaked by bittorrent leaches or whatever, when in reality their revenues increased, costs decreased, and SUBSCRIBERS INCREASED. Everything you say is a lie, stop posting about stuff you (ironically) know nothing about.

I've administered an e-mail server for my company. Don't make ASSumptions.
Then you should already have known why those spam controls are in place. And you should also already know the proper steps to set up an email server that the rest of the world will recognize as legitimate.

Why you posted what you did in this thread, my assumptions are very safe ones to make.
1) Its not the job of the ISP, but of spam filtering software.
2) Those "spam controls" can be circumvented and only inconvenience legitimate users.
3) Forcing users to funnel their e-mails through a central point is a security weakness.

And this has what to do with equal access rights to the 'net that the cable monopolies want to get rid of for more $$$?...just curious.

what McCain is saying is true... regulation kills competition... once regulated, it becomes more expensive to enter the market, once regulated, the established players, with money, stay and those without money, and not yet established do not have a strong enough foothold to withstand the regulations...

Econ 101 typically doesn't pass muster here too much...

are you saying that mikemike is failing or passing econ 101?

regulation can certainly improve competition, thats undeniable. What is so 'difficult' about net neutrality anyways? What is there that people object to, other than profit?

Lets put this into something most can relate to. Imagine if we had a road neutrality act that prevented govt from controlling traffic on our roadways? For instance many metropolitan areas are increasingly using for pay fast lanes, bus lanes, trains, and even utilizing systems that switch entire lanes directions depending on the time of day.

Those measures typically increase efficiency and reduce congestion. If we had a road neutrality act the govt would be forced to add lanes at high cost to provide the same level of congestion because it would be unable to by law to control traffic.

Because people's computers get compromised. You want the idiot next door surfing pr0n to destroy your connection because his computer is an open relay sending millions of emails an hour? With net neutrality that will most likely occur because your ISP will be powerless to stop it. All traffic is treated equal.
