McCain Suspends his Campaign

From another forum:

Bullshit...

This is like playing one-on-one in a game to 10. The guy losing 9-3 calls time out and says "I need to take a moment to wash my car and I think you should help!"

If it was me, I would have noted in the thread title that it was suspended to return to DC to work on the liquidity crisis/legislation. (Edit: Thanks OP) 🙂

I think you're unnecessarily getting Dems excited.

The last time I heard a candidate announce the suspension of their campaign it was Hillary, and she basically dropped out; McCain isn't.

This just means he won't be giving speeches. The bush flunkies running his campaign will doubtless continue producing smear ads and fruitlessly attempting to dig up dirt on Obama.

This could be just what the doctor ordered to stop his downward trend in the polls.

isn't he just temporarily suspending it in order to give his full attention to the bail-out bill in the senate as opposed to blindly voting the party line?

Politically, it seems like a smart move, as it suggests he cares about the country more than politics. Of course, with approval of the bailout among the public so low, it might also be smart to distance yourself from that whole mess.

this is just for show, so he can say in his next ad that obama doesn't care for the economy because he didnt suspend his campaign either

McCain really needs to work on his pandering. This is so obviously and pathetically a campaign tactic that I feel like it will do him more harm than good.

Smart move but short-lived. Nobody is going to approve this bill. $700 Billion to bailout wall street? Fuck that.

He's trying to hide a record of puttingthe public second by naming his campaign theme "Country First" (as if other candidates put it third or fourth) and showing how much he cares by suspending speeches the first day of the convention for the hurrican, or now for this.

He could put country first a lot better by opposing the ripoff of the taxpayers.

Hahaha, the Obama campaign's response?

"We can handle both".

McCain just got owned.

Ayup. McCain just took a punch to the face. What the hell was he thinking?

He's worried about his lobbyist friends and Wall Street sycophants. $700 Billion could have them go into retirement early.

McCain certainly wants the image of concentrating on the current fiscal crisis thereby placing country over his political needs. And oddly places himself in a weird position.

Ideally, McCain could come up with a brilliant plan to heal the economy, and that plan would be adopted by congress and GWB. Some what of a slim or next to none given McCain's economic team is staffed by lobbyists and Obama has a blue ribbon economic team, then either McCain fights for his plan, which will put him in opposition to GWB who wants immediate action, or McCain has put on just a sham show as he fights for the GWB plan.

This is just pathetic by McCain. How can Republicans vote for this clown? One week he claims 'the fundamentals of our enconomy are strong' and this weeks he says were in a financial crisis and we need to put politics aside. The truth is McBigot knows Obama starting to pull ahead in these close states due to all of this economy talk going on and this is just a stunt to put the attention back to him, and try to convince Americans he 'wants to fix the economy'. This is coming from a man who is claiming the economy is not his strongest point. The debate takes what, a few hours? They can work on something together until then, and then afterwards if they want.

oh my...

Who in your camp didn't see that coming McCain??? come on!!

McCain is obviously trying to take advantage of real peoples problems stemming from the Wall Street crisis. And I am certain it wasn't McCain's idea. He'd rather be out on his straight talk express.

This will give Obama's camp soo much to pummel McCain on. he admits he knows little about the economy yet he thinks he can stop campaigning so he can help out in what is arguably the worst economic crisis since the 'Great Depression'!??!

I'd rather tell McCain, "Thanks, but no thanks."

Joe LIEberman just said he was disappointed in Obama and that he should reconsider.

HA HA HA HA HA

I'm getting my ass kicked, quick let's cancel the debates!

He has the hubris to think he's needed in DC right now? They have 98 other people who can screw up just fine without his "aid". Weak attempt to play the "leadership" card. You've had 26 fucking years to fix the problem john, you aren't going to accomplish shit in the next few weeks except ducking reporters.

Hope mccain doesn't show on friday and Obama has a free 2 hour Q&A with whoever was moderating the debate. It's not his fault his opponent fled.

Young Grasshopper has a point, in chess terms McCain is in zuzwang, in political terms its called being on the horns of a dilemma, but McCain is now damned if he does and damned if he does not, and now, no matter which way he moves, he loses.

So he creates this sideshow and plays for time, hoping no one will notice he is now paralyzed. When in fact he killed himself by saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong at exactly the wrong time, and now its just a matter of us sticking in the fork and saying McCain is done.

I think the right is going to try and corner Obama by making it look like McCain is rising above politics and setting differences aside. While Obama shows his true partisan colors and he only has his self interests at heart (ie winning)

I think Obama's campaign needs to respond by saying that any President is going to have a TON of issues to deal with and a bunch of crises over a Presidential term. All of it is important and none of it can be put on hold while a President attempts to devote all his time and energy into a single issue.

McCain is going to have to learn how to multitask.

Even my father who is an independent just balked at this news. He said this is the kinda stuff that will make him vote Democrat this year. He said he felt like McCain is pandering.

He laughed at the Obama camps response.

My personal opinion is that McCain is being stupid, this is going to backfire on him. Especially the delaying of the debate thing. Makes him look like he doesn't wish to face Obama
