McCain on gas prices: "I don't recall, and frankly, I don't see how it matters."

http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/4889

The same McCain who called Obama an elitist? How out of touch with the people can you be when you're not following one of the top 5 stories of the year?

Even if you don't ever drive, or ever fill-up, when the headlines everyday are--gas prices are approaching $4, gas prices are $4, gas prices are above $4, there's no excuse for not knowing about the magic $4 benchmark.

I can understand him being too old to catch on to computers, but surely cars were invented around when his brain still worked, no?

Paying his property taxes on time doesn't seem to matter either.

Seems like a quote taken out of context. From what I gathered in the comments in that link, he didn't know the exact price of gas that day. Who does?

He didn't pay his property taxes on time? Do you have a link? I can't imagine such a scofflaw would even attempt a run at the presidency, as most people would reject him outright if this is true.

I'd like context too. If he was saying he didn't know precisely what's going on and effectively doesn't care, that's one thing, BUT if he was asked what today's price was this is a non-starter.

AFAIK, he has no problem whatsoever paying his property taxes.

Now, some trust unrelated to him managed by his wife when the bills were sent to the wrong address, that's a different matter.

As far as the gas price thing, we all know that McCain *gets* that prices are high. Knowing the exact price is difficult as it seems to change about day around 3:00 PM.

I filled up my vehicle about 3 weeks ago, so I don''t todays price either.

Here again, McCain handles something badly. All he had to say was something like "I know it's way too high, that's all that matters". Then he could launched into his energy plan to bring prices down etc.

Q WICKSOL: When was the last time you pumped your own gas and how much did it cost?

A MCCAIN: Oh, I don?t remember. Now there?s Secret Service protection. But I?ve done it for many, many years. I don?t recall and frankly, I don?t see how it matters.

Wrong address? Come on Fern.

Here's the deal, when you owe money to the Feds, your State, credit card companies, they can and will find you. It's not a matter of communication, especially on tax matters.

with all her money, you're really going to argue that she was deliberately avoiding paying taxes on some random condo that her elderly aunt lives in?

we're talking a grand total of like $8,000... frack, I could pay that in cash by the end of business day today.

Definitely a dumb question, and he's right - it doesn't matter.

Not a McCain fan, but it's pretty clear he's referring to the "last time you pumped your own gas" part, and the potential to link his answer to gas prices is simply him not being careful in how he answered the question.

This sort of "gotcha" politics does show the potential danger of pushing the "elitist" line against Obama for McCain. The son/grandson of admirals and husband of a multi-millionaire isn't going to be able to create a "joe 6-pack" image that will hold up to close scrutiny. When McCain last pumped his gas matters if he truly wishes the U.S. to believe that an African-American son of a single mother is somehow the more "elitist" candidate because he went to an ivy league school (like pretty much every President in modern history).

I'm an Obama supporter and IMO this is a non-issue just like the taxes thing. But hey, someone's gotta balance out ProfJohn's non-issue anti Obama threads, right? 😛

Did you even read the article?

Looks like you didn't. It's been confirmed that the bills were sent to the wrong address and returned by the post office to the county.

And this is property tax, not income tax. Two different things.

In most places property taxes, unlike income taxes, become an immediate lien against the real estate. I.e., if it's ever sold, the taxes are automatically paid by the closing attorney. And in some places once a set number of years has passed without payment (some places it was as little as 3 years), your property was put up for sale in an auction to pay off the outstanding prop tax balance due.

Read the article, the bills were sent to the wrong address, and again it isn't John McCain's property nor does he have any control over it etc.

That's basically what I was thinking. This thread is a non-issue and I am a Obama supporter. It doesn't make any more sense to even consider this matter as being important any more than it does to consider all of the Obama garbage threads that appear on this forum by the same few posters every few days.

Actually I've noticed that McCain often gives blunt one word answers to questions. Today when asked about having the resources to fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan he quickly answered "yes and yes" to both parts of the question. You would think he would put more thought into answering questions, and give more than just a quick snap as an answer.

I must be senile, out of touch, elitist, etc.

You're not running for president, so it doesn't matter if you aren't in touch.

not only that, it was a bank that managed the trust.

McCain is so stupid. Obama would've said "Lets Hope for Change" but no one would've written about it because they'd all still be cheering.

At least he doesn't think the problem with high gas prices is that they could have "risen at a slower rate". Afterall, higher gas prices are better for everyone.

Banks managing trusts for his cacophony of homes across the United States...you can't get much more anti-elitist than that.

The home was for an elderly aunt of McCain's wife. McCain's wife setup the trust to manage the home.

Congrats jpeyton...you went 0 for 2 in a single thread.
