they can probably all recite their stump speech with their eyes closed by now, but I can't imagine any of them memorize these super long speeches that have become prevalent.

Did Obama/Clinton use one?

Sometimes. You can tell by how they present there speech. Obama looks around when he addresses the crowds, talks to people, Hilary does as well to some extent though is frequently staring at the camera. McCain just stares..and stares..till you think he is dead...and want to poke him with a stick..just to make sure..

I don't see the problem with using a teleprompter. Candidates used to use note cards or fully written out speaches at one time, a teleprompter is just a different technology that does the same thing.

Joe Scarborough (former GOP congressman, now morning show host on MSNBC) was cutting McCain up with a knife on his show this morning about how McCain, despite being in Washington 30+ years, is absolutely unable to read a speech off a teleprompter-his delivery is always flat, stilted, etc.

Just about all national politicians give their speeches off a teleprompter, it's a basic skill for them.

I can see an old stoogie like mcsame using one. But, as for the rest, I don't think they use them... I don't recall Bill ever using one.

They all use them. And, uh, so what?

Obama was the only one who didn't sound like he was reading. Which isn't difficult to do, so I could never figure out how there are some politicians who sound like robots when reading a script.

Try it sometime, it's a lot harder to catch onto than you'd think. I did it once-compared to my wooden performance McCain is a Robin Williams. But I still contend it is an essential basic skill for a national politician.

for mccain i assume they use bold block fonts about the same size that you would see on sky banners being towed by aircraft. ;)

that's why he reads the prompters the way he does: the prompters can only display one...letter...at...a...time with the fonts being so large, so he has to wait for the whole word to show up so he can speak it one...word...at....a.....time.

and that also explains the wierd painfully forced plaque-laden grin he displays because the prompter takes that long to tell him to smile.

i can just see him practicing for hours on end that spooky looking grin in front of his bathroom mirror. i swear i've seen that same grin in every b grade vampire movie i've ever had the misfortune to view.

Hint: When a candidate isn't speaking to the crowd, but directly into the television camera, they're using a teleprompter.

That's why McCain's speeches are robotic and the crowd doesn't react well to the delivery.

I remember once hearing that Bill's teleprompter died during a State Of The Union speech, and he was able to finish the rest of the speech from memory without anyone noticing. Not sure how true that is, though... sounds like Democratic folklore to me.

All were clearly using them on the speeches this past Tuesday. I thought I remembered Obama and Hillary looking down to notes instead of 100% teleprompter like McCain was doing though.
