McAfee Viruscan vs NAV

Need to get a new subscription for my norton, not ready to spend money on it, can't get the free-after-rebate deal for NAV as I already have used the upgrade rebate, so the other option is VirusScan.
What you think?

Norton is better than Mcafee, but there are better anti virus programs than Norton. Kaspersky currently holds the crown for being the best AV program.

Last time I used McAfee it seemed like a huge resource hog. I'm using NAV now since I get it free from school anyways.

i actually prefer Symantec's home version (Norton Antivirus) better than McAfee's (McAfee VirusScan). However, I much prefer McAfee's corporate product, VirusScan Enterprise, to Symantec's corporate version, having used it and supported it at work.

wouldn't touch either honestly. Kaspersky if you willing to spend some cash AntiVir if your not. both are better than norton mcafee imo.

Have you looked into Panda Software? I found it to be a good product ... I was using NIS before making the switch. Well, I got a free subscription back then, so the move was simplified 🙂

Anyway between those 2 products, I would choose NAV.

QFT

I just tried Antivir and I have to say this is the ugliest looking program ever. I'm sure it works well, but it LOOKS like something that was coded back in the 80's. The icon in the system tray looks like something a kid made with Windows Paint.

Avast might be slightly less efective at catching viruses, but at least it looks like a professional program.

hmmm... should have added an option in the poll for antivir and avast.
so is antivir as good or better than NAV in terms of being up to date and stuff? I'm not seeing a huge performance hit from NAV on my rig, but I'd like to have something that's dependable.....
How dependable is antivir?

Both NAV and MVS cost money. So I don't see why you said you're not ready to spend money on it, and then ask which of the two pay-for programs we'd recommend 😕 What am I missing here?

free-after-rebate stuff... don't qualify for NAV since I've alredy done it.
but now i'm seriously thinking abt antivir, would you really trust it over NAV or VirusScan?

Well... 😕 ...if it were for me personally, avoiding risky behavi0rz and using a Limited-class account and keeping my system patched, then I could live with AntiVir if I had to. If it were for my little sister, then definitely McAfee :Q or Kaspersky (which is what I got her after her NAV 2005-equipped system got thoroughly 0wned).

I have a lot of respect for McAfee's engine since we use the corporate stuff at work. But last I knew, McAfee only releases updates to home users once a week (it's every weekday for corporate). Ditto for Norton home-user stuff. In that respect, AntiVir and AVG are both better because they don't leave you hanging out for a week between updates, and that could be worth a lot right there. But Kaspersky > *, with their hourly updates. IMHO 🙂

I purchased a 2 year subscription for the Kaspersky security suite $60.00 after using Norton since '95 . I am very pleased with thier product.

Has someone mentioned yet that Norton sucks?

😉

Customer support costs $$$$, no support forum, resource hog. And you pay money for all that. Yeah, I was a NAV customer once.

Don't know about McAfee.

I use Avast!. It's free along with Antivir and AVG. I tried all three and all are decent (though Antivir doesn't check email). Heard good things about NOD32 but it costs money.

Who cares what it looks like, it does the job done and its low on resources 😉
