Are you looking to D/L or buy the software? Norton has a 30-day trial downloadable version. I personally prefer Norton over McAfee, but just my personal opinion.

The one thing I like about the new NAV2003 is that it also now scans chat downloads for viruses as well. This is becoming a new problem lately.

I've always had good luck with Grisoft. Its free, updates automatically and seems to catch everything coming or going. At least it did until my ISP took over the virus catching chore - I still keep it updated but have yet to catch a missed exploit.

Every Symantec product I ever used always gave me grief eventually (I haven't used their AV) and I have friends with McAfee that missed incoming worms. May be they didn't update in time, or some otrher user error was involved, but there it is. I used Grisoft for a couple of years at least without a murmur - no pop-ups tellling me to upgrade to the pro version or spam giving me "valued customer unique opportunities" etc.

Thanks all. I am actually running the free 30 day trial of Mcafee. I have used NAV in the past and thought that worked well. It sounds like it is NAV 2003.

Last question - Do virus apps decrease system performance?

Hmmm...Maybe I will give AVG a shot before spending $40 or so on NAV or McAfee.

Because it is free ----> does this mean I have to deal with spyware, adware or popups?

Panda all the way.

I use the Titanium because it just works, I don't know its there and don't have to fool with anything. If you feel the need to monkey with everything go with the Platinum.

Give the free trial a shot. You will like its speed, compatability and effectiveness at its purpose.

I installed AVG. Does it scan Outlook Express emails? It mentions Exchange and Outlook clients on thier web site. I am sure it must, but can someone confirm please?

Yes it does,go to AVG control panel and put a tick in the plug-in box for Outlook Expresss and all the incoming e- mail boxes etc to the left of it.

Thanks Mem. I didn't have time to mess around with it yet. This helps. So far I am impressed, the total system scan was pretty fast, it dosen't appear to be bloated and I like the interface. Thanks for the tip.

When you enable the OE Plugin, make sure you haven't got OE Running at the time, otherwise you'll get hangups and errors with OE

Another happy user of AVG.... but I did take out the signature in al of my emails.... untick the "certify"

This way, it wont create the sig in & outgoing emails.

But great free AV.

Cheap if you want to buy it too.... :)

LOL, ironically, I was searching for this thread to post some questions on certification, but I think you answered them. So certify is just text and has no value other than that? Also, what does certify incoming do? Can't seem to find any differences checked or unchecked, no text in my incoming iserted either way.

thingy I think I did consciously shut down OE before ticking the OE plugin.

Last question - I noticed my system was not in standby this morning when I got up, just the screen saver was on but my the monitor was not in standby. This was at 4:45 AM. Does AVG run a scan early in the morning or does it conflict at all with systems going to sleep?

LarryJoe,go to AVG control panel ,look under the "Update Manager tab" is that enabled with time ,date etc? Also look under "Scheduler" do you`ve the tick in the box "enabled scheduled tests".

I`ve both of mine disabled, but it`s down to personal choice since I prefer to update and do my own manual scans.

I have enabled ticked, but for the life of me, I don't see where I can set the times for scanning or updating. I vagualy remember that this may have been a limitation of the Free version.

From AVG:

Advanced Scheduling

The AVG Professional Edition in Advanced interface allows you to set a better conditions for running of scheduled tests. Whereas AVG basic allows you to run test every 24 hours only, in Advanced interface you can define almost any possible parameter - day or days when test should run, time and what to do if the test can not be run, etc...

If you like a scheduled tests, because they don't bother you in your computer usage, you will appreciate the advanced features of AVG scheduler available in AVG Professional Edition.

Test Results

I guess you need the Pro Ed to schedule specific times. I wonder what the default time is?

OK, here is a show stopper for me, I have a "removable hard drive" which is actually a Windows Ipod. When AVG is installed, I can not "eject" or "Stop" the IEEE device. This is where XP communicates with the device and obviiusly, XP will not release it because AVG is monitoring it.

Is there a place in AVG where I can tell it to ignore certain drives?

in pcworlds review panda was the only one to stop EVERY virus in their tests, norton, mcafee, and others let some get by.
if you decide to buy, buy the download version, no need to get the boxed edition

You can schedule AVG to run at any time you want (from the Scheduler), and to update at any time you want. There is a separate setting to check removable media.

My opioin is that it doesn't! I run NAV2003 and I don't see any decrease i can even play NOLF2 with no slow downs while it is running in the background!
