Did a clean install of MC2005, loaded drivers for Sata HD and all went well. When system rebooted I had no access to the outside world. Downloaded latest MOBO drivers, NIC drivers and turned of Win Security - firewall, etc. Still have no outside access. When I did a XP install on the same system everything came up and worked. So reformatted HD and zero'd out the HD and reloaded with MC2005. Any thoughts besides the usuall bashing of M$ appreciated.

Device Mgr shows Network Device is ok - green. Properties show correct info. This was a clean install of MC2005. I had no problem loading Sata drivers when install asked for. The problem is something in theMC2005 load of the software. Something is not activating or installing. When I did an unistall on this same HD and zero'd out HD and installed XP OS networking is fine., everything works. Then I reformatted HD, zero'd out again, reformat and clean installed MC2005 its same old story - its like the software loaded(about 35min install) off the cd's but not all of it is running. When I click on the MC icon in Start/Win menu it starts up, but then when I click on icons within MC I get messages saying can't run because missing dll's or get error codes and system reboots. If I load XP on pc works fine. Is there something I'm not understanding about MC2005? I thought this was a stand alone OS but it is acting like it won't work without XP being on the HD. I did the 2nd load with XP loaded, then loaded the MC2005 software and when that was all done all I ended up with was XP as the OS with no sign of MC software. Any thoughts?

So again; what do you get if you perform an ipconfig? Also as nweaver asked what happens when you try and ping something (if you need an IP try 4.2.2.2)?

MCE is XP; the network stack is the same.

This is what is strange. Device mgr shows Nic ok and shows latest driver I downloaded.
Ipconfig yields:
Connection DNS Suffix: blank
Ip Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet mask: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: blank

Ping to 4.2.2.2
Destination Host Unreachable.

Have cable modem, and router, reset both. This HT pc I'm trying to use MC2005 on will not work on the network. If I load XP instead everything comes up. With MC2005 I do not show IE on the pc under programs. In explorer the directory looks pretty lean compared to when XP is loaded on the same pc. Also when I go into the MC main Icon it shows to windows and one is empty. I still feel something is not being loaded but can't put my finger on it. Again thanks for the help. Next suggestion?

check network connection properties...is it set to DHCP? Firewall on/off?

I woulc give myself a valid IP (depending on your network) and then try and ping the router.

That's part of the trouble, I have no IE, and no network connections. I'm using another pc on same router and cable modem and all ok. Both lights light up on NIC on MC2005 pc when I plug router cable into it but stay solid when I have MC2005 loaded. NIC worked fine under XP.

Id try moving the NIC to another slot, or, write down all the IP info from the XP install and then manually set the IP in MCE

The MCE is an original/hologram CD, right?

SW is all legit. Holograms and all. If anyone loaded a clean install of MC2005 did IE and OE come right up when you booted up after the install? On Start all Programs they are not on the HT PVR pc I'm trying to get MC2005 to run on. When I loaded XP all the usual M$ stuff was there but not in MC2005. I've looked in all the directories on the cd's and they are not there unless the're in a compacted file with a cyptic name in the .cab files.
Nic is built into DFI K8M800-MLVF mobo and have latest drivers from Via loaded and the driver worked find under XP when that was loaded. More suggestions?

Ip Address: 0.0.0.0
This is without a doubt your problem; no IP address = no internet.

If you let it sit for a while does that address change to a 169.254.x.x address or does it stay as 0.0.0.0 indefinetly?
I'm using another pc on same router and cable modem and all ok.
What kind of router are you using (brand, model)? If you do an ipconfig from that other PC what do you get for an IP address?

Ip address stays blank. And other pc has a "full" set of addresses when doing an ipconfig. Will try and load IE + OE off of XP cd tonight. IE + OE are not to be found on my MC2005 cd's, unless somebody knows where they are hidden. If the xp and mc2005 communication sw is the same, you could fool me. The OS is picking up the installed HW and the driver's show up with the latest downloaded vrsns, so I don't think I have a HW issue, else why did XP load and run oK, but MC2005 does not ?
Thanks to all responders. Keep 'em coming. I ain't giving up - it's now a challenge.

I just did a clean install with MCE2005 on a Dell box. 1 disk, everything loaded, after initial boot, MCE specific files loaded, everything AOK. No tweaking neccessary. GP

Still struggling. Those of you that have done MC installs, what format was your HD in NTFS or FAT32? And did U install on ATA or SATA HD and what partition sizes did U specify or did U use the whole drive as one large HD? And how large was your HD size in GB?

So far what I've found last night was that in the Sys Mngmt I had to go in and Manually
"Start" about 8 or 10 process to get the system to connect to the internet and have IE run. And by doing that I was able to get the NIC port to come alive too. But when I got to M$ to download the updates, they sent me their "new + impoved" updated SW that required a reboot. And - Yup - U guessed it, when it finished rebooting all those processes that I manually started were gone along with the Nic and IE.

Something is weird about this install. When I click on certain items in Win Start All Pgms
many do nothing. It's like what ever sw process that controls firing up a demanded app is not there. More suggestions please

Doesnt matter this is irrelivant to the problems you are having, see the rest of my post below.

It sounds like your install has all kinds of issues. If it were my box I would probably stop playing around with it and format than do a clean install (MCE + Drivers, and no additional software). As was said before MCE is XP, the networking components (along with almost all the rest of the OS components) are identical. You should be troubleshooting the network issue the same way you would under XP Pro w/ SP2.
I'd request new media from MS.
I havent really seen any indications from his posts that the media would be bad; typically with bad media the CRCs dont match pulling data off the CDs and you cant install it. The symptoms he is describing sound like problems with his install.

And lastly noxspert please stop refering to Microsoft as "M$"; it's not funny or clever (we've all heard it a thousand times before).
