MC AMD processor + Free Mobo

They have had such a deal for a few months now. In October, I got an Athlon 2 X4 640 with an MSI 785G-E53 Motherboard (through their step up deal for an additional $10). It has been working fine since. I would suggest taking advantage of the step up deal just because then you get a sightly bigger motherboard with a couple of PCI slots for legacy items.

The stepup boards also support 125w and 140w cpu's for those that enable 4 cores on the Phenom ii 560 BE. The cheaper boards have been known to die suddenly....also don't test these boards with prime cause it will fry them quick.

PS: The newer GM version black editions unlock a lot more successfully.

I recommend:

785GT-E63

870A-G54

M4A87TD/USB3

Phenom™ II X2 560 Black Edition

Well at my MC they were only selling the Biostar board, BUT, it lists 125W support and even the X6 on the box. I see ZERO reason not to prime95 test these systems.

@13Gigatons - What is GM version black edition? How can one tell?

@magomago - it'll be covered by warranty if it does have a melt down

There are also unlisted specials. For example the MSI S785GTM-E45 will also combine free with the Phenom II X2 555, almost same as the 560 for $12 less. The Biostar A780L3G combines with Athlon II X2 250, that's a really nice deal comes in at $58 (plus tax, if applicable).

It's easy enough to find them, keep mixing and matching in your cart and see what you get.

I've been looking at this deal for awhile. Awesome bundle, and I live 10 mins away from a MicroCenter, but the thing is, I don't trust these motherboards to handle overclocking 😛

There is an additional part to this deal. You can get $40 off ~any~ AMD board if purchased with one of the listed CPUs. Actually, as with the main deal, there are some unlisted CPUs for which the $40 off works, but only with a subset of motherboards.Once again you'd have to experiment with mixing & matching in your cart and see what happens.

I got the GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H, listed at Microcenter for $99.99, for $39.99. Price match with Newegg's $79.99 (Yes, Microcenter does that if you ask nicely) then $40 off with purchase of Phenom ii X2 560.

The Phenom did unlock to 4 cores, I just looked at the box the CPU came in and it is the "GM" as per 13gigatons comment above. I expect all Microcenter branches will have that line of CPUs.

Microcenter readily admits it's because they want you in store making impulse buys. It works 🙁

If they only had a outlet around here I'd gladly test their trap for them! Ugh, I'm usually in the market for these kind of combos for a cheap upgrade to secondary machines...generally don't see any deals that touch these elsewhere.

If MC offered ANY of the e series X3 or X4 procs, I'd be down there yesterday scoring some goodness but sadly, they want me to spend my money at Amazon or NewEgg.
I know they Google the deal threads so my suggestion is to add one X3e and one X4e proc to the 10 AMD procs you currently offer.
The 45 watt procs are perfect for HTPC.

Not much of a difference with the e series:

I picked up an Athlon II x4 640 and MSI 785GTM-E45 for $96+tax about a month ago. Been a good setup so far. I use it as my main computer and it does everything I throw at it. It's no Core i7 but it's also $100 for board and CPU. I was able to build a whole machine with my spare parts plus this board and CPU + a Coolermaster USP 100 for $50 and it came with a 550W Coolermaster PSU.

Thanx for the usage chart 13Gigatons!
I'm hoping to find a proc to replace an unlocked Sempron running as an X2 Regor with either an X3 or X4. The e series is what I want as the htpc is contained in a cheapie hec case with a 270 watt psu.
While there is not much diff with those e series compared to the regular Athlon II/Phenom II procs, it's enough to concern me.
Now if a better case and psu were added to the mix, then sure...I'd go there but for now, I'm limiting my quest to those 45 watt cpu's

Thanks again!

if you check out their ad, they list more of the combo's.

what i don't like is that it states $40 off with ANY compatible AMD motherboard. which doesn't seem true when adding various options to your cart. although some of the listed mb's also don't give the discount in your cart, but I was trying it with the 955 BE which isn't in the chart but is listed in the ad.

i wonder if they honor the discount in store when it doesn't show in your cart.

the only thing holding me back is knowing sandy bridge and bulldozer is just around the corner.

One thing they dont list on there is you can get the Athlon II x2 250 for $58 and it qualifies for this deal. I got it with the free Biostar mobo and it's great for a HTPC (as long as you don't need bluray- 760g wont do that)
