MB's with 6 layer PCB

6 layers is not a feature you'd be after. There's no reason. Technically, more layers are needed as component density on the board rises and consequently, signal traces don't fit on two layers anymore and similarly, power distribution needs more layout real estate.

So, it's more like six layers come sort of naturally on more feature packed boards.

Thanks, but it may be a feature I want since reliability is a concern.

If similar boards with similar features are based on lesser layers then could that cause a problem, for example the Max3 or other top of the line products.

No. As a designer, you want to minimize on the number of layers simply for cost reasons. But this is really a very black/white decision - either the stuff can be done in N layers or not.

Sure, advertizing tells you "it's a six layer board, which means quality, so pay more for it". In engineering reality, six layer boards are quite a bit more expensive to make - and this is why they cost more.
