So I just got a 3TB Seagate Barracuda drive on a Black friday special. Dropped it into my Windows 7 machine and it asks if I want MBR or GPT formatting?

I think I read that if I want the drive to show as a full 3TB, I must use GPT? Any benefit to using one over the other?

This drive will be used for backup and storage mostly.

My main OS drive is a 120GB SSD drive, which I'm guessing is MBR?

Does it make sense to use MBR and do a 2TB and 1TB partition, or just got 3TB as GPT?

Yes, you need GPT if you want to use all 3TB. MBR can't address >2TB regardless of the number of partitions.
