MBP and SSD Problems

I have a newer MBP 13" (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 ghz, 4 gbyte 1067mhz RAM, OS 10.6.6) laptop purchased about a year ago in which I installed a Kingston SSD NOW V+ series 128 gbyte drive. All seemed to be well until three months ago.
The MBP would occasionally lock up the sound port and then the cursor. I used AppleJack to repair the preferences file to restore performance. Now I am also getting an invalid file size error and AppleJack will not repair it.
I need to use disk utility from the original install disks in order to restore operation.

The major clue which indicates an SSD problem is taking longer than 12 seconds from turn on to user screen. When rotating cursor is present longer than thirty seconds I know it is time to fix things...

Could the SSD be going south?:
 
check the smart on it. should give indications of problems in the unit.

time machine backup and do a full erase on the entire drive. if it fails intermittently the drive is kaput. i have a 160gb 2.5" apple drive that does just that. randomly fails on erase. kaput. no smart criticals
 
From what I have seen on other websites, SMART isn't incorporated into many SSDs other than, possibly, newer Samsung units. OS X does not use on-drive SMART generated data... SMART is activated in the Disk Utility application.
