While some people prefer/recommend doing a fresh format and clean install when putting in a new MB, you CAN do it without having to reformat/reinstall.....

Open up REGEDIT and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE delete the folder ENUM and all its subfolders then reboot. This will force Windows to redetect ALL of your hardware.....

Or go into safe mode and delete everything in the device manager except Plug&Play BIOS.

if you're not using ME, then I suggest you copy your intel chipset drivers inf files for the cusl-2 to a folder on your hdd before the switch so that it's easily accessable for install!

I never understand why people are so scared or lazy to format. Set up your system correctly and you can reinstall in 15min.

A new system (motherboard) I always start with a fresh format, possibly explains why I have little trouble.

<<It's being niether scared nor lazy, it's called being smart. If you do exactly as Hereitik says then there will be no need to format at all.>>

I always have one reply to that type of statement.

Microsoft what a bunch of fools, its takes me 40plus minutes to install windows 98se, those dummies could of just made an image (without the ENUM key) installed it from DOS and it will be guaranteed to work no trouble, perfect in 10 min. One boot, all hardware found installed and configured correctly. Why would they put me through all though reboots, detecting PNP, detecting Non PNP. Idiots!!!

I dont think there help lines couldn't handle the increase. With a new motherboard follow the wise advice of format/install with minimum devices. Slow & steady then when you got it right, image that sucker. No BSD's, No illegal operations, No lockups, I must be doing something wrong.

am i alone in finding this CAMS's comment ridiculous? 10 minutes for installing Windows onto a complete stranger system? no reboots? when I change the motherboard Windows ME will reinstall everything and that takes time, maybe 30 mins. and with ME you can revert back to your old motherboard with system restore, and even that makes the HD whirr for over 10 minutes.
your comment is arrogant and uninformed insofar as the way people lead their lives. if you are a kid or unemployed, maybe you can tolerate reinstalling all your old programs. maybe even you saved all your old settings beforehand. but for most of us in the real world it's a big tedious waste of time, and Windows CAN manage to install a motherboard without a format. i know because I have done so.
i reiterate that the biggest bother of computers is wasting time on them; time is money.

<<am i alone in finding this CAMS's comment ridiculous?>>

I suggest you read the post again, I was responding to someone else, My statement was supposed to be ridiculous in its sarcasm. What people are proposing of deleting the ENUM key and throwing in a new motherboard/components as being OK, is not.
Dont you think Microsoft could have done the same thing? one image copied from DOS in 10 min, one reboot your done. They didn't do it because it causes to many troubles.

<<maybe you can tolerate reinstalling all your old programs.>>

No I cant thats why with a bit of prior thought I create a Ghost image regulary and can restore that in 10 min. However on a new motherboard take the time and effort to format/clean install as recommended by the maker of the OS. They do know better than both of us.

PS, ridulous & arrogant! Hummmmm.

:DJust want to thank everyone for their input, especially to
Heretik and Red Dawn for the info.

Do I do this with old board(safe mode).
I want to try this because it is something new to learn.
Also it is a big time saver.

Thanks again,
Mort

Couldn't you just image your disk, but not image the device drivers?

If you are going to give the method I posted earlier a shot (wiping the ENUM keys) I would do this with old board still installed, then shut down and swap your motherboards and boot it up from there.....

My Personal Experience - My win98 install survived 4 motherboards in this order Dual celeron BP6, AMD Athlon K7M, Single Celeron BP6, Duron KT7-raid.

I see no problems with removing the drivers and rebooting.

Back up critical data.
Assemble boot disk, drivers and manuals.
Boot to Safe Mode.
Open Control Panel/System/Device Manager.
Remove all devices EXCEPT Plug and Play BIOS and Dialup Adaptors.
Shut down and remove all power.
Install new mobo per manual, mount cpu+heatsink, connect floppy, HD, cd-rom and video card.
Power-up with boot floppy. Time to check all switch, LED and device connections. When OK, power down.
Reboot with boot disk and IMMEDIATELY enter BIOS. Set BIOS to BIOS DEFAULTS and configure boot sequence, floppy and HD per mobo manual.
Exit and Save BIOS configuration, shut down and remove boot floppy.
Reboot under win98, let OS detect devices. Install chipset drivers and video adaptor card drivers.
Install other devices one at a time, rebooting after each install.

Final result should be a conflict-free system, with all previous registry tweaks, custom settings and preferences intact. No need to install previous apps, format HD or any other time-consuming BS. This procedure has worked for me several times.
