If I stick with this socket A 462 setup for now, I need to get it going.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I should setup the following?

AMD mobile XP-M 2500+ with stock oem HSF.
Asus A7N8X E Deluxe
OCZ Premier 2 x 256 MB PC3200 DDR (2.5-3-3-7)

I want to run 200 mhz (400) fsb and memory but stay with a core speed of 1.8 ghz for starters. Probably won't overclock much over 1.9 or 2.0 ghz. If I can't overclock, I won't bother for now.

What voltages should I use for the above setup?

thanx in advance for any input :)

Certainly there must be someone on here with this setup? Or something similar?

:)

I have the XP-M 2400 with the Shuttle AN35N-Ultra. I have it overclocked to 2.43GHz(12.5 x 195). My temps are 44c under Prime95 blend torture test load. Right now, I have been runing Prime95 at this speed and my vcore @ 1.725 for over 16 hours.

I think I'm running at 1.6V right now with my XP M 2500 @ 2.4Ghz. If I put it to 1.725 I can achieve 2.5Ghz without a hickup, but the extra heat and necessary cooling (and most importanlty the accompanying noise) isn't worth it. I think it's safe to say 2.4Ghz is the point of diminishing returns for me. Btw, I might even be able to go lower but I haven't tried; I'm pefectly happy with how it's performing now so I haven't conducted further testing.

Last thing, don't go above 1.8V with a mobile.

EDIT:

I should add that I'm running at a 11.5 multiplier @ 400mhz FSB at a 1:1 FSB to memory ratio. Seems to like the odd numbers. If it doesn't boot on you when OC'ing, that could be why. 12.5 @ 400Mhz put me at 2.5Ghz btw.

Looks like a decent setup :)

My setup (soon to be used for parts/ and for sale)

Asus A7N8X-E
Athlon XP 3000 Barton (400mhz)
OCZ 2-2-3-5 EL 2x256MB

I am using stock voltage at 1.65 and left cpu at 2.1ghz and I overclocked my memory to 432DDR left the multipler at 10.5x if that helps.

I'll play around. I was thinking about trading up to AMD64, but buying another power supply puts the added costs at over $200 CAD and I think I'd rather give this mobile 2500+ a try. I'm sure I'll notice a huge improvement over my older 850 mhz Slot-A t-bird and 256 mb sdram :)

So with an OEM AMD HSF I have a reasonabley good chance of doing 1.9 to 2.0 ghz?

yep you'll have that easily with an athlon mobile. I've seen people with 2600+ hit 2.7ghz on xtreme forums. But I recently just upgraded to a64 winchester 939 3000+ and i'm overclocking 1.8 to 2.5ghz o air :) I think that says alot. Also the athlon xp vs the a64 the xp doesnt hold a candle against the 64bit jus fyi.

Thats cool. So what motherboard are you using and what are your settings to overclock to 2.5 ghz?

I just bought an asus a7n8x ultra 400 from the egg and for some reason it displays my mobile 2500xp as 800mhz, this is after setting the fsb to 133 and multiplier to 14 at the bios. I can go back into the bios and see the values still set to 133 and 14, I think i have a rev2 board, it was preloaded with bios 1010.

Why 133? And btw for mobile processors like the 2500 800mhz is what the BIOS defaults to, so you have to manilpulate your settings in order to set your CPU at the desired speed. I was able to run mine with a 12.5 multiplier on a 200Mhz FSB for an effective rate of 2.5Ghz.

i only have pc2100 ram plus the descriptioin displays the cpu as 266fsb so thats what im running it at...

XNice, the problem may be that you cannot use multipliers over 12.5 with that processer by default. There is a workaround for this however, but I don't see a link for in in my favorites. It's risky anyway, it involves severing the L1 bridges I believe.

The limiting factor most likely is nto the CPU as the mobile 2500 is unlocked. Xnice, even though it's rated at 266Mhz FSB, don't pay any attention to that as it will run EASILY past 400Mhz FSB. Right now your RAM might holdyou back though, never know util you try :)

Athlon XP and XP Mobile CPU's are not completely unlocked, as you do not have free access to all the multipliers available in bios. You will either have access to low (12.5 and lower) or high (13 and up) multipliers depending on how AMD locks the chip. XNice's cpu has a default multiplier of 11 from the factory, which means he has access to low multipliers.

Here is the link that allows you to change the multiplier. Pinmod Guide.
The perspective you use is important, as you can either look into the socket on the MB, or flip the cpu over and look down on the pins.

wow thanks for all the help but as i found out, it was what someone said abotu high multipliers. I changed the fsb to 166 and... bam right speed is shown. Funny thing is, I have no-name pc2100 sticks in there and it seems to run 166 rather well. my main thing was that the chip was advertised with a 266fsb and yet it wont run correctly when that speed is chosen.. oh well. This is for a friend anyway so i doubt it'll be oc'ed.

My own personal rig is an old school barton 2500xp at 3200(200x11)....
