Good question. Mazda's second quarter sales results should be public by now. Has the 6 been available long enough to be mentioned in the report? If so, would somebody care to look for it. :)

Yaris
Corolla
Avensis
Camry

i think the Altima here is the Primera over there.
The Altima is around the same size as the Primera, but I think they are based on different platforms.
For everyone complaining about the interior of the Altima, Nissan could do with taking a few styling tips from the new Primera.
Primera Interior
Unfortunately for us, it seems that the decent engines all go Stateside, as the Primera comes with a choice of 1.8l, 2.0l petrol or a 2.2 diesel engine :disgust:

Why? Because the currrent consensus in the US is that Japanese cars are higher quality than domestics. For the most part, it is the domestics trying to take on the imports, not the other way around.

Yeah, that should be a no-brainer. Hmm, Buick Century or Mazda 6? Hell, Buick Century or used Daewoo Leganza? It's just no contest. Period.

If I was shopping for a no nonsense family hauler, I would pick the century over mazda 6.
Mazda6 looks good, and probably is pretty fun to drive, and is a good competitor, but it looks kinda small. Altima should ditch the chrome taillights and the interior, and it will be fine. It got the space, the power, the handling, the look.

Doesn't the UK get the SR20DET and the RB26DETT?

The US always gets snuffed when it comes to performance. QR25DE? C'mon...
The only good Nissan engine we get is the VQ.

Mazda has a decent reliability rep.
It's not quite up there with Toyota, Honda and Nissan, but better than Subaru, Mitsu, Isuzu, Suzuki, etc.
My sis' Mazda Protege is doing quite well.

The engines in the new nissans are not much to write home about. We had the Nissan Sunny GTi-R a few years back, that was a similar size to a VW Golf and had 220hp which was pretty fast, but the most powerful engine in the new Primera is the 2 litre petrol engine, which has 140 hp. Not too much for a 3000lb car.

This is just counting the standard nissan sedans, obviously the Skyline, 300zx etc have/had better engines. The skyline does has the 2.6 litre twin turbo that you mentioned.

Even the Nissan Maxima here (which I think is the same as the Infiniti I35 over there) comes with a 2.0 litre option for the engine.

It seems that most people are more concerned with fuel costs rather than faster cars here (not that surprising at the equivalent of $4.20 per gallon). Even my 1.8 litre Ford Focus which does 0-60 in around 10 seconds is quicker than the majority of cars here.

No nonsense family hauler = Accord/Camry/Caravan/Explorer.

Century/Park Avenue/LeSabre = cars for people with false teeth and white hair.

Well, the car is pretty new, I'm sure that they will introduce new engines sooner or later :).

Century is more of an Avalon type car. But with Average age of Camry and Accord buyer in the 50's there gotta be tonnes of false teeth and miles of white hair amongst them :D
Looks like the Altima Rear end might be redesigned in a couple years, at least the Japanese version is looking that way.

Hopefully. They should stick the 3 litre V6 that is used in the Renault Laguna in there.

Still looks pretty crappy though. As does the rear-end of the Camry and Accord

i personally don't see what all the fuss is about the new designs from toyota, honda, and nissan. i hate the look of the new camry, accord (especially the coupe.. never like the current one either), and the altima (rear of it mainly). I won't say much for the engine, so long as it reliable.. it's really just bragging rights.. that isn't that top of a priority for me. Handling is.. and it sounds like it's pretty good on the 6. In my mx6, i must say i love the handling.. just need to find new tires.. heh. But if it gets plauged w/ problems (like my crappy auto tranny and shatty paint)...

Anyway, the trunk space looks roomy enough for my needs, and it looks better than what i see out there. Altho, mazda will have a lot of work to get that pushed. I'm prolly one of the few ppl who don't like the look of the any of those new looks... sure, i'll take the engine.. but that isn't the only decision for car buying. With that said, it's just depressing to think about it cause i won't be looking for a new car for year to come :(

Agreed.

I also agree with the post saying it looks like crap.

It's about as bland as it gets.
And btw, I think the Altima looks better.

I don't like how the console is in the center.

<<onto the screwed up rear-end (a hallmark of current Nissan designs...crappy rear-ends: Altima/Maxima/Sentra/Murano/G35).>>

What's wrong with these rear-ends?

G35

Altima

I think they look gorgeous...and much better than previous Nissan designs. :)

This will be interesting to see.. I still think the 6 will be slower in all straight line contests (0-60, 1/8, 1/4) but it should excel in handling. It won't be behind too much on acceleration anyways.

I want to know the pricing on it. Then we'll see how much Mazda has come to the table with.

I really like the Mazda 6 hatch. There is some excitement over on the Edmunds Townhall boards for this car. I hope it does well, just for the simple fact that more competition in the car business is better for the consumers. What I don't like is that the sedan is coming out this fall/winter, and the hatch and wagon will not be here until spring/summer 2003.

The G35 Coupe looks fine from the back. The G35 Sedan has the same basic design them out back, but it's still worse off. Doesn't have the muscular/macho them of the G35 Coupe.

The Altima's rear just looks like crap...especially with those clear lamps. The only car that can pull off the clear lamp look is the original...the IS300.

The G35 is one of the ugliest looking car's I've ever seen. The front end has all the attractiveness of a fly's head, with it's bulging bug-eye headlamps. The rear end's awful proportions and fish-scale taillamps are even worse.

The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are both butt ugly cars. The Mazda 6, like a Nissan, looks like a rice rocket.

This is what good midsize sedans look like:

Ford Mondeo (future Mercury)

Opel Vectra (2004 Chevrolet Malibu)

(I didn't read through all the prior posts.)

Just an FYI: Mazda is 0wned by Ford, so the Mazda 6 will be made in Detroit. I feel bad for those who think it's a Japanese car. It would be a nice car otherwise.
