$4500 doesn't buy an RX-8 unless you are ok with towing it home and doing the engine replacement yourself.

Yup. Even the ones I saw in the low teens were higher mileage 04's and 05's, and I'd stay they hell away from those.

The current one is rated at 16/23 or so. Their gas mileage is bad but probably much of that is how aggressive people drive them.

I keep a detailed log of my mileage on my iPhone. Driving aggresively I get around 15.5mpg city. Driving like a grandma I get 17mpg city.

Highway is about 23-24mpg. Oh how I long for my T56's 0.50 overdrive 6th gear. There's no reason I need to be doing 4k+ RPM cruising at 80mph. My only real gripe with the car.

Just reviewed a bunch of these on autotrader. My word but their resale is just laughable. Miatas hold value quite well. Not these. Not at all.

That's why you buy them used. I couldn't imagine paying $35K+ for my car.

Get something that's cheap.

1996-1998 Honda Civic HX/DX will do you well on gas. They can get 40mpg+ on highway driving.

Wow! That's insane, Yeah they are dirt cheap here, driving isn't that expensive. You require road tax, About 140 per year and insurance (Which for me on my RX-8 was £700) other than that, it's the same price as over there....

Road tax on an RX-8 is £435 a year now, plus mental fuel costs and that's why people are selling them so cheap here. You're better off spending a bit more to get a BMW 330D or something instead.

D: What is happening to the world. :( That's unfortunate, but still, given the cheap price of the car, (compared to a 330D) it still makes financial sense, (second hand OC)

Let's see...

I am averaging less than 9MPG.
The car has no torque (especially when compared to my old 2.0T GLi.)
Drinks oil - you really need to check oil every other fillup.
Useless in rain (twitchy) and especially snow, but having 19" Summer tires aren't helping.
Useless trunk (spare tire takes all the room.)
I've found some plastic pieces from I don't know where in the interior...lol
Smells like someone farted when you start the car in the morning. (Yay Sulfur.)
Marbles in the glovebox sound after a carwash or heavy rain...(annoying sound.)
There's always someone in a Honda w/fartcan annoying you.

...but after owning it for 1 year, 2 days, I still smile when I sit in it and start it up. My 2 favorite things during the week is the drive to work and the drive home. It's a fantastic car, not the strongest, but it catches people's eyes and is a blast to drive. Shit, making this post makes me want to take a longer ride to get home today.

Yeah it could be stronger, but when you are shifting it at 8700 - 9000 rpms, you won't give a shit. You'll be too busy smiling.

Gas prices are high, yeah - just get a buddy to chip in once in a while. Even if you don't have a buddy. Fuck it.

God I miss that beep.

A car is an intensely personal choice. Whatever you end up getting should be the car you want. NOT the car your friends or people on forums talk you into or out of. Be your own man, make your own choices. It's your time and money.

I own a 2008 RX-8. I purchased it for reasons specific to what I wanted and expected from the car. The RX-8 is a drivers car. It is well balanced, handles like a dream, and responds telepathically to control inputs. It is the only car I have ever owned that has given me a smile every time I sit behind the wheel. The only thing I plan on replacing mine with is the next rotary sportscar Mazda puts out (assuming the RX-8 isn't the last due to tightening emissions standards).

That being said it is NOT the car for everyone.

1. MPG - Mixed driving will average 10-13mpg. Don't believe or expect to get any better (a lucky few do, but trust me you won't be one of them). If you can't afford to keep it fueled (I spent $55 at the pump this morning), or the thought of getting less than X-mpg bothers you, get something else.

2. Oil consumption - The Rotary engine uses oil by design. The harder you drive it, the more it uses. Drive the car like the sportscar that it is, and you will go through a quart every 1K miles. Smart owners check their oil every fill-up, and keep a kit (oil, funnel, rags, wipes) in the trunk.

3. Tires - The RX-8 deserves quality rubber. Expect to pay $160-250 per tire to get the best performance and handling from the car. Good tires will last @20k miles if you drive the car hard. Less if you track it.

4. Maintenance - Apart from checking the oil, smart owners do additional care and feeding.

- Adding a couple ounces of 2-stroke oil to each tank of gas will improve performance and engine life.

- Letting the car warm up every time you drive it will prevent possible flooding and carbon build up issues.

- Redlining the car (once warmed up) every trip keeps the engine clear of carbon and the driver and happy.

- Coil packs and plugs should be checked/replaced every 20k miles for best performance.

5. "Haters" - A lot of people out there bench race spec sheets. In other words they look at 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times, HP/Torque numbers, skidpad, etc, etc and tell anyone who will listen which cars they think are great and which ones suck. At the end of the day it is nothing more than their own personal opinion. If you are bothered by what other people think, then don't get a car like the RX-8.

If you are still interested in getting an RX-8, here is the best site on the net for information.

Enjoy whatever you get and drive safe.

Why do British people say "brilliant"? It makes you sound like snotty effeminate prep school students, especially with the upper class accents.

Because in Britain it's something people say... I don't have an upper class accent.

It gets about the same mileage as a 8 cylinder engine. sheeesh.

The rotary is inherently inefficient. I think it's because the rotor has to do so much movement that isn't extracting power. Even during the expansion stroke, the whole thing is wobbling and sliding at an angle.

14.3mpg is the worst I've ever seen over a full tank. I drive aggressively enough that my coworkers give me grief about it... I've probably cut off / weaved around / gone WoT past half of central Florida.

That's without ever seeing an interstate or highway. City driving, 11 mile commute, speed limit never over 45mph.

What are people doing to get 9mpg?

If I need a really efficient car I'll go with an old-school diesel Volkswagen Rabbit. (My Mom has claimed that hers got ~40MPG) Otherwise I'm trying to get something with a bit more horsepower.

I knew someone with an old diesel Rabbit that got great mileage. Heck, I knew someone with a 1998 or so diesel new Beetle that got great mileage and was actually super peppy to drive.

How old are you btw? Insurance will be a bitch on a sports car.

I was wondering this too.

I also knew someone (met at a local LAN party) that was saving up for a Mustang GT500. I got him thinking after I asked him if he had checked insurance rates.

Check out a Hyundai Tiburon, resale values are lower(You could find a 03-06 in your range), good gas mileage(I got 24~ highway). Maintenance isn't bad, it will be fun to drive at your age, and will look cool enough to get you laid until you're 20ish.

After that you may realize that its a FWD chick car, but then you can buy a 350z :)

Get something like a used Civic, or a Focus. The RX8 is nice, but the insurance, and repair costs are going to be killer for someone your age.

Yep. Insurance is a bitch. In fact, I am paying $300 more/6 months for my '09 RX-8, than I would have if I bought a '10 135i.

Comprehensive/Collision on this car is insanely high.

My insurance went up $100/6mos compared to my '05 GMC Envoy when I got my '07 RX-8.

32, clean record.

Not saying this is the car for a 16-year old (it isn't), I'm just surprised at the spread in ownership costs on fuel and insurance alone.
