A car is an intensely personal choice. Whatever you end up getting should be the car you want.
NOT the car your friends or people on forums talk you into or out of. Be your own man, make your own choices. It's your time and money.
I own a 2008 RX-8. I purchased it for reasons specific to what I wanted and expected from the car. The RX-8 is a drivers car. It is well balanced, handles like a dream, and responds telepathically to control inputs. It is the only car I have ever owned that has given me a smile every time I sit behind the wheel. The only thing I plan on replacing mine with is the next rotary sportscar Mazda puts out (assuming the RX-8 isn't the last due to tightening emissions standards).
That being said it is
NOT the car for everyone.
1. MPG - Mixed driving will average 10-13mpg. Don't believe or expect to get any better (a lucky few do, but trust me you won't be one of them). If you can't afford to keep it fueled (I spent $55 at the pump this morning), or the thought of getting less than X-mpg bothers you, get something else.
2. Oil consumption - The Rotary engine uses oil by design. The harder you drive it, the more it uses. Drive the car like the sportscar that it is, and you will go through a quart every 1K miles. Smart owners check their oil every fill-up, and keep a kit (oil, funnel, rags, wipes) in the trunk.
3. Tires - The RX-8 deserves quality rubber. Expect to pay $160-250 per tire to get the best performance and handling from the car. Good tires will last @20k miles if you drive the car hard. Less if you track it.
4. Maintenance - Apart from checking the oil, smart owners do additional care and feeding.
- Adding a couple ounces of 2-stroke oil to each tank of gas will improve performance and engine life.
- Letting the car warm up every time you drive it will prevent possible flooding and carbon build up issues.
- Redlining the car (once warmed up) every trip keeps the engine clear of carbon and the driver and happy.
- Coil packs and plugs should be checked/replaced every 20k miles for best performance.
5. "Haters" - A lot of people out there bench race spec sheets. In other words they look at 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times, HP/Torque numbers, skidpad, etc, etc and tell anyone who will listen which cars they think are great and which ones suck. At the end of the day it is nothing more than their own personal opinion. If you are bothered by what other people think, then don't get a car like the RX-8.
