Mazda Protege5 Question...

Danman

Lifer
I'm really interested in a Protege5. My Dad was telling me that he heard that the timing belt needs to be replaced every 30k miles? Is this true? My Altima has a timing chain and I haven't had to replace it. WTF IS THIS?! I want to get this car and this is stopping me! Someone please enlighten me on this!

I believe most manuals recommends replacement every 60,000 miles. Not sure if the Mazda is any different.

The one I have my eye on is automatic.

Sorry, I meant vehicle owner's manual... not manual transmission.🙂

heheheh 😉

According to this website, the recommended interval is 60,000 miles.

Pretty much average for a car that uses a timing belt. 🙂

WTF?! The Toyota Corolla S has a timing chain and that takes wayyyyy longer than 60k miles to get replaced. :| Now I'm upset, I want that car. 🙁

you're letting the fact that you have to change the timing belt every 60k miles stop you from getting the car you want?

Even if you keep the car till it dies, you'll probably only change it 3 times.

My Eclipse's timing belt gets changed every 60k per the manufacturers maintenance schedule. 30k seems aweful low. I'd look into that.

That's so true. Each and every vehicles requires some form of maintenance to the tune of several hundred dollars per year. If it's not the timing belt that needs replacement in one car, it might be another part in another vehicle. Timing belts are not a big deal or issue. Just form a relationship with a good, local mechanic - and you should be set. The dealership will charge way too much for the repair.

I don't see the problem - my 200SX also has a timing chain. Timing belts just wear out quicker than the chains do, just face it. If you are letting that keep you from buying the car, maybe you need to have your head checked.
