Brief definitions for the people who keep screwing them up:

Overrated = Mazda says 250 HP, it actually has 180.
Underrated = Ford says 120 HP, it actually has 150.

a 238bhp car dyno'd with 180hp is still a 25% drivetrain loss. that still seems a bit much.

Both 2003+ accord motors (I4, V6) and the 2003+ corollas are moderately underrated.

Besides, domestics had their share of overratings. Something like the 2001 cobra was pretty overrated from the factory. The fiasco was bad enough that production was pretty much axed.

It was the 1999 Cobra. There was an issue with the intake manifold and exhaust system that caused a power loss. I believe SVT was still identifying the cause so they canceled all orders for 2000 Cobras (only produced 300 Cobras that year - all R's) and gave price protection to anyone who initially ordered a 2000 for a 2001 model.

Eh... was never really impressed with that car anyway. Over at the Mazda Rev It Up, the damn thing looked like it was put together by children. It's not as solid as Mazda's other cars. When I closed the door, all the panels and window shook like crazy...

Well, the overrated part I kinda expected since it seems the norm these days. There's few affordable sports or sporty cars on the market that live up to their power claims. A lot fall short but by how much it generally varies.

Honda likes to overrate their perfomance VTEC mills all the time... just a tad so it's a nice round number. 200hp? More like 195 but it doesn't sound as nice as 200. Yeah, I definitely hear the underrated claims of most domestic performance cars... the SRT4 dynos at the wheels almost more than Dodge claims at the crank. I guess they figured 205hp is enough to hook people in.

Still, I'd rather wait for an RX7.

Ho Hum that's not a couple of horses off - that's really a huge deal if they're willing to buy the car back. That must cost them a TON. What a terrible blunder. Heads must be rolling in Japan.

If I was in that boat I'd sell the car and buy a 350z... course I'd never be in that boat in the first place since i'd go straight to the z :)

Well I have to agree it seems imports keep overratings and domestics keep underrating. My Firebird is rated 280HP, it gets 300RWHP, RW not flywheel which is where they rate the 280. Exhaust has been replaced so it maybe got 285 RWHP before that still underrated.

Wow, so glad I didn't buy it. At the time, that was one of the options I was looking at.

Yea, LT1 and LS1s were notoriously known to be highly underrated. I think it as for insurance purposes

Regardless of the error on horsepower, reviews on the car have been excellent and most owners have hopefully test driven the car before buying.

as disappointing as it may be to have less horsepower than originally told, I doubt many owners will sell the car back and will just take the free maintainance.

That plus they couldn't tread into the Vette territory (on paper).

Dodge Hemi blows a hole in that theory

I would never take a word of a munufacturer on HP ratings...

yeah, and everyone's review said, "where's the power (under 6000 rpm)?

which domestic is underrated?

Dodge SRT-4 dynos close or over the flywheel-rated HP (215HP) AT THE WHEELS!

Slightly Modded (CAI and higher redline) Here

Here

During our testing, the angry little SRT-4 hit 60 in 5.8 seconds and put 223 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque to its front wheels on our Dynojet chassis dyno. That means our test car made more power and torque at the wheels than it's rated for at the flywheel, which is unheard of from nearly any car.

Yeah, but it is still a Dodge (I love when people use that argument!)

GM has always underrated their performance/sports cars. It was/is a sly way to actually help the consumer with taxes and insurance. So many folks rag on domestics but like somebody said: domestics=underrated and imports=overrated.
