For someone who generally doesn't like SUV's, I'm really digging this CX-5.

It has a decently low stance and overall looks good. Seems like it will drive nicely for an SUV, has just a slight lift, and should get decent gas mileage...especially if they bring over the diesel. I really hope Mazda pulls this one together. I could definitely see my wife getting interested in this as a kid hauler.

Yeah I think it looks good too. My mother is looking for something a little higher up than the Fusion but with decent gas mileage and I think this would be a perfect fit.

The side view makes it look like somebody else's crossover, but I can't quite place my finger on it.

my only gripe with mazda SUV's would be...well, they're not SUV's. havn't had too much experience with the bigger model, but the small one just feels like a 6 hatchback.

not that that's a bad thing, it just makes the vehicle seem kinda pointless...just get the 6.

To me, it looks like a FX35, which isn't really a bad thing at all. Amazingly though, here's a pic of an '04 FX35, and they are almost identical lol.

I does look rather similar to the EX35 now that you have the side shots. Here's hoping they have vastly dissimilar price tags.

That 2.2 ltr diesel they test drove should be a good buy - if it ever shows up in the US.

I'll be interested if it is rated something around 27/34mpg. I'd still be concerned of the capability of the AWD system compared to Subaru.

Any word on release date?

FX/EX35?

you guys mean the G35 wagon? ;)

in case anyone's not sure, i'm just teasing, btw. i like both the mazda and the infin. but the latter is definitely just a slightly lifted car. the brand new ones are friggin nice though, but the AWD is just kinda pointless unless you live in a climate where you actually end up driving on loose snow a lot. and then the traction is so retarded that you'll want to rip the VDC module out and huck it in a river.

I like Mazda styling, though.

Well if the 6 had a hatch...then I'd be fine...but it appears Americans will only buy "wagons" as thinly disguised CUV's (thus the CX-7, Subaru Outback, etc). I like this CX-5 because it is closer to a wagon than a CUV which I find fairly pointless (unfortunately my wife does not...and you can't argue with wife logic).

A haldex (Swedish) AWD system is just fine for 99% of people in any climate. It is not the "best" setup, but it is plenty capable for winter/inclement driving with the occasional off-road requirement.

I'm just glad there is a renewed interest in wagons/small crossovers that offer almost car-like fuel economy but have a lot more cargo space which is precisely what I want from my next car. I want good economy for daily driving and I want AWD and ability to haul camping gear/bikes/kayaks/skis/snowboards for my weekend getaways. It seems that just 5 years ago the only choice we had was sedan/minivan/SUV, if you wanted good fuel economy you had to go with sedan, if you wanted more space you had to "upgrade" to a gas sipping minivan/SUV. Now we have a lot more choices: Subaru Outback, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Tucson, CR-V, RAV4, and now Mazda CX-5. Automakers are paying a lot more attention to this segment, which makes me very hopeful there will be a lot of competition and innovation in the midsize crossovers in 3-7 years when it's time to replace my current car.

EDIT: to me CX-5 looks like Infinity FX35 in BMW x3 size, I like the look, but I hope Mazda didn't screw up the front grill as it did in most recent generation...

Sounds really promising.

He addresses some of the armchair reviewers issues about the 150 HP and the interior bits.

For the most part, I like his writing and reviews and the CX-5 sounds really promising. I wonder if Mazda has plans for a turbo and if the diesel is still slated for the US.

Agreed. I really like a just a good, basic vehicle that drives well. The diesel really sounds like it would round this car out perfectly. I'm hoping it is out by the time we need to buy a "kid" car for my wife.
