I'm a NYC'er and I never really understood the big deal about this. They're horses, they like to pull, they generally aren't mistreated. The NYPD had many many more horses around the city than the carriage drivers do. I have never seen this any more cruel than owning a dog in the city and I own two of those.

Release them free into Central park lol

I wouldn't mind if they were banned. It would be nice to have southern Central Park not smell like horseshit or have to dodge around piles of the stuff left on the path. It would also be good because they meander down Central Park S (not a fun road to be on when you're on a bike heading towards the southern entrance of the park)- it forces you out further into the road, which cars already treat like a freakin' speedway.

It's good to see the mayor of the largest city in the country tackling the issues that are relevant to our modern 19th century society.

Its fucking disgusting. Especially when it rains and you go for a bike ride. And, nothing tops the stench of horse shit on a hot and humid day.

To your point - it's also fucked up to the animal. It's the city, filled with smog, car noise and awful people. Let the horses exist outside of NYC.

This statement clearly indicates to me your exposure to farm animals and their fecal matter is very much lacking. Horse shit is very tame.

True, passing by a pig farm on hot and humid summer morning where the funk hangs like fog is far, far worse. Cattle feed lots are very close if not equal to the pig lot funk

You haven't smelled anything till you've stood inside a big chicken coop.

Or that one strangely empty subway car during rush hour.

Haha, yes. I ride the Q to work, which seems to have the biggest collection of hobos, dance teams, and mariachi bands of any train. Maybe it's the 10 minute DeKalb to Canal St. stop that attracts them.

There's some camaraderie between people who have been subjected to the shit car for a stop though. You bond.

I'm sure that is awful, but don't discount the markets on Canal St.

Downtown SA has horse carriage rides available most days. There isn't any horse shit on the roads because the only horses downtown are those carriages. The carriages have a poop catcher attached to them so 99% of the poop goes into a bag. Any of the 1% is picked up by the guy that follows all the carriage rides around. So there is zero poop on the roads here. It's so fucking simple is too easy I guess for the likes of New York City if their claim is about horse shit from carriage companies.

Really though, since the cops in NYC use horses too, I think the majority of the shit there comes from that source if the carriages are setup like they are here. If not, it's not that hard or expensive to set the carriages up like that. Going to that extreme of trying to ban horse carriage rides smells of something different than horse shit.

I don't have time to dig up the story; and surprised it hasn't been mentioned here yet. There's a back story to this whole thing: valuable real estate and donations to the mayor. The real reason for getting rid of the horses has nothing to do with the horses - it has to do with an opportunity for one of the mayor's friends to make a whole lot of money; something to do with the property where the horses are kept.

Edit: found an article. I don't know how valid the article is, but it does give a little food for thought. Of all the issues plaguing NYC, those horses have to be pretty damn low on the list of priorities.

I'm going to guess you've never been there and don't have any actual knowledge of what you're talking about, as usual.

First, I'm quite certain there are a lot more carriages there than in SA. Second, while every carriage has that bag, not every carriage doesn't have its own dedicated poop scooper. I've never heard of anyone deploying them on such a large scale.

There has been a movement to get rid of the carriage horses in NYC for a very long time now, one entirely disconnected from any real estate deals.

Hhnnnggghhh, try the 42nd street shuttle. There's a 'disabled vet' that's only a month away from getting 100% disability so he doesn't have to be any longer. Of course he's been there for five years or so. It's only a 90 second ride but for fuck's sake I have his speech memorized at this point.

This is true. Chickens and especially hogs make horses seem like perfume dispensaries.

Chattanooga has the same thing. I've never see horse shit on our roads (though admittedly I avoid downtown when practical) and as a biker, that's certainly something I watch out for.

I don't know if I've ever ridden that shuttle, actually. Now that you have his shtick down though, you could open up a competition on that front.

I can't recall from my time in NYC, but do they actually allow the carriages to use traffic lanes?

If so, that is grounds enough for them to be removed, shit catcher or not. They impede the flow of traffic and should be considered a hazard.

Have I been there? Yep, but I was a young kid at the time and don't remember much.

But are you seriously going to try to tell me that NYC has that many more horse carriages than SA? SA is a HUGE tourist spot. The amount of stables in and around SA has far more horses than NYC has.

There are a few carriage companies that compete downtown. My friend's wife drives for one of them. And yes, not only do all the horse carriages have bags, each carriage is followed by a dedicated pooper scooper person that picks up the occasional rare pop that misses the bag. There is literally zero poop on the streets because of that. It's not that hard to hire some workers to follow horses around for a few horse at night and make sure there isn't any poop left on the ground. Pay for those workers, like the handlers, drivers, and such is all handled in the price of the carriage ride. Depending on the carriage type and length of the ride determines the price. It can range from $30-$150 for a ride. My friend's wife pulls in on average $350+ in tips alone on Friday/Saturday nights. He said she made over a grand on Valentine's Day last Friday for about 5 hours of work.

Of course as the driver you have to sit behind that poop bag all night long....

I don't know about banning the carriages, but I do agree with fining anyone who doesn't clean up after their horse. I mean really, if you can fine a dog owner for not picking up their shit, it seems like you should be able to fine a horse owner.

Yes, I am saying that. SA metro area is 1/10th of the size NYC. Tourism? You're lucky if you get 1/10th of the tourists NYC does. Don't kid yourself. SA is a village compared to NYC. I've been to both.

Why is every thread started by a conservative brain defective so full of horse shit?
