I wonder if this man, young as he is, could be goaded into saying something or behaving in a disqualifying way. If his opponents could throw out some bait and see if he bites. He's quick to respond and has a level of energy that you don't see in most candidates. His weakness might be if they trip him by using that rush to answer against him. To redirect that energy.

I figure it'd be some trap with policy. A calculated ploy to cause a misstatement. I hope his staff helps prepare him for such a debate. His forward honesty is endearing, but it also leaves him vulnerable to certain tactics.

While I think you may sadly be correct it is absolutely insane how bad the double standard is.

Honestly though I think his biggest hurdle will be appealing to the black and Hispanic constituencies of the Democratic primary electorate. From what I have read he is appealing primarily to affluent whites, which is Bernie Sanders territory. As Bernie learned in 2016 that’s not enough.

As of right now, my desired ticket would be Mayor Pete + Elizabeth Warren. Get an intelligent, humble, and well spoken leader with a policy wonk and ultra experienced senator as his right hand. She kind of rounds out what he is missing.

Lol. Like I said, zero percent surprised.
It's funny how 'free stuff' to the Trumpers means 'other people getting the govt benefits I already receive,' or 'taxpayers getting some some return on their tax dollars rather than their hard earned money going straight into the pockets of the President's cronies.'

Still buying into the collusion delusion?
Until the full unredacted Muller report is released, there is no rational reason not to.

"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing." - Donald J. Trump, 7/27/16

Yeah, somehow $1.2 trillion for rich people paid for through debt and raising the taxes of middle class people isn't 'free stuff' but food is.

It will be extremely annoying to me when Democrats get back into power and Republicans, joined by the entire news media, pretend to be very concerned about the funding mechanisms for Democratic social programs after not giving a single shit about funding mechanisms for tax cuts for rich people.

Shit man, I'm struggling to come up with an example. Maybe you can help. I mean, assuming we're discussing a level playing field, tit for tat, eye for an eye.

Maybe like, murdering a hooker cause he snorted all his blow?

Yeah that's going to be his biggest hurdle in the primaries. I'm hoping that blacks and Hispanics have moved past it since the days of CA Prop 8. He could put someone like Kamala Harris in for the down ticket, but that won't help him in the primaries.

This is touching on the dem's biggest vulnerability, which is how to appeal to minority voters in the primaries without taking positions - like reparations - which could hurt us in the general election.

Yes..it will be interesting if he can draw the latino and AA vote. Especially among the more-reliable 35+ crowd. The evangelical whites (those who might have a problem with a gay man) aren't voting for a Democrat anyway, but those Latino and AA voters who identify as either evangelical or very religious normally are Dem voters, but I'm not sure they'd come out in very large numbers for a gay man. I also wonder how a gay man on top of the ticket would do in union halls Dems need in the industrial midwest.

Obviously in this day and age, it's very important to be able to look past a person's gender/sex/color/etc, and in many ways we're getting there, but I'm not sure 2020 is the year if we're woke enough as a nation to elect a gay man. I think Mayor Pete is great, and I could vote for him and could absolutely see him being president someday. I just not sure he can win back the industrial midwest and fire up Latino and AA voters. We'll see. I hope I'm wrong

It's one thing to appeal to the religious left, but they're already ok with gay people. Religious blacks and latino's don't neatly fit into that category of "religious left." Socially they're a lot more conservative, and fall a lot closer to the white evangelical view of homosexuality.

No, that is an area Trump was wrong. Winning never gets tired, it is fun each and every time.

In this case as in most cases with Trump and the current Republican party, winning is defined as having the power to aggravate Democrats by taking a position that is utterly worthless if it didn't frustrate them. It's not a kind of winning I want to support. If the tables get turned, I will not be in favor of Democrats using that advantage to punish Republicans.

Listening to the interview now. I don't see why you guys are so smitten with him yet, but we'll see.

Would love to hear specifics of your commentary. I actually don't know much about him and am not a Democrat (although it is unlikely I'll be supporting any Republicans in the next couple years at least). Even to the extent that I may disagree with your opinions, I do feel that when you actually justify your positions based on reason they add value here.

There isn't any demographic that'll vote 100% for 1 person.

28-35% latinos vote for Trump.
10-12% AA's vote for Trump.

But a major demographic that is missing from adequate representation is millennials and they're large enough to sway the election. Most of them are okay with a gay candidate too, but we need to address millennial problems now regarding a living wage from a job, healthcare and cost of education.

Trump's only solution is immigration control but has that really solved millenial problems?

Post 16. I got about half way through, up to that point he was little more than your standard leftist talking points dressed up in a new wrapper.

Except swapped. Although, as we currently see, experience does not seem to be a concern of the electorate.

1: Immigration has not been, and probably never will be controlled.
2: Trump is living in a fantasy world. Automation took most their jobs, not China, not immigrants.
3: Automation will only accelerate in coming decades. We are not prepared.

Fox and Friends worried Pete could be the next Obama. This means Fox News are planning their attacks now, as we speak. So much for u

Can't you articulate a position beyond the level of a 4 year old??

"I hate Pete because he sucks"

You level of intelligence is frightening for an adult (assuming)

I wonder about that too. Here's probably top of my list ATM, but I wonder how big he can make the tent.

Otoh he does seem to have an Obama-like spark that pulls people in. I could see him creating a pretty large and unlikely tent. Perhaps not with some minority groups (just don't know at this point) but I def see in some Midwest and conservative circles Ds have been losing.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Ana Navarro's tweet about Buttigieg:

Today, I saw a video clip of @PeteButtigieg playing classical piano. Another where he speaks in Spanish. And this one, were he tells Parisians, he shares their pain -in French. Just imagine having a President whose intellect exceeds that of a root vegetable...for a change.

Please let us bring intellect and statesmanship back to the oval.

Buttigieg 2020

Queue the Huffpo article to do just that:
Pete Buttigieg Was An Effective Mayor — With A Gaping Blind Spot
South Bend residents describe a technocratic leader who struggled to see beyond spreadsheets.
Derided as a person of privilege whose city was not kind to the poor / minorities.

What I've heard from him so far:

Do away with the electoral college... because his side didn't win, so now our very purposeful and long standing election process must change.

Medicare for all... free stuff!

Trump is bad and his supporters used the power of trolling better than the left did, they need to fix that.

We need to do all the things we whine about Republicans doing, but let's package it up in a nicer wrapper.

Terrible.

No Warren, she doesn’t add enough value to overcome all the despicables she’ll dredge up.
I’m a MA voter & ive voted for her.
She is much better as a Senator or better an Attoney General.

Not wild about Kamala Harris, but she seems a perfect fit down ticket for Buttigieg. She brings in minorities, women, and is likely more progressive than him.
