It's because you're not informed about the history of it. It's not your fault, unless you refuse to educate yourself and see why black people find it so offensive.
In a nutshell there was a campaign by slaveowners and racists to say that black people were less than human and happy to be in slavery. As part of that campaign, they created a long lasting stereotype of dumb black slaves that sat around eating watermelon all day.

As for the story itself, I just had to laugh. It's funny that any elected official could by so incredibly stupid. I'm guessing that his town probably doesn't have enough black people for this to make a difference. I know I could never vote for someone who did that, mostly because it proves they're too stupid to govern.

Moreso prejudiced against Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members and other domestic militant organizations in the United States advocating white supremacy while hidden behind conical hats, masks and white robes (and nowadays internet forums) in order to keep secret from their communities their true feelings of hate for no substantive reason at all.
Race of course does not exist as defined vis-a-vis a scientific concept within Homo sapiens. 1 cosmopolitan species only. Race division is completely invalid scientifically with regards to humans.

From his comments thus far, I truly don't believe OC is a racist person (unlike that troll winnar), he is just one of the many conservatives convinced that he is under attack by minorities trying to get their mule and acre from him.
Though I think most who fall into this category are easily lead on and occasionally childish, I don't think they are necessarily bad people. Most are pretty hard working and dedicated to doing good and most probably had to sacrifice and do a lot to get where they are. In doing so they have gained a certain amount of bitterness to everyone around them both above and below. They don't understand why all their hard work didn't warrant them more power, money, respect, etc.
They idolize those born with a silver spoon and therefore join their cult of conservatism. They also look down on those below them as people who didn't work as hard as they did. They have been convinced that now that a Black person has been able to achieve so much that other "lower" people will now be chomping at the bit for their position. They look at the system and see that many steps have been placed in to help minorities take advantage of opportunities and start to wonder where their "side steps" had been while they climbed up the mountain.
It isn't racism, it is jealousy, which turns into racism when fed by that "conservative" propaganda. They hate when someone gets to take an easier path, unless that someone is their idol and what they truly want to be.
EDIT: Also I love Fried Chicken and Watermelon. Anyone who doesn't is an idiot.
Some of you really need to lighten up! It is a common thing in other forums to say "racist" when it makes absolutely no sense, in order to make fun of the people who cry "racist" at things that can only be percieved as racist if you are really looking for it.

Congratulations. I am very happy for you. But my assumption is still correct. You are reward "nicely". Not Extremely well, not as much as I deserve, but "nicely". You are compromising. Everyone inspires to take on the world. You so far have reached "nicely".

You have fallen into the middle class black envy from white guilt. We all want to be successful, powerful billionaires and through life we have tried our damnedest (whatever we have convinced ourselves that means). Now we see every slightly possibly misconstrued partial racial comment, picture, joke, product, plant, statement being attacked and examined and used against "white people". We think the war is over and if black people want to do better they have everything they need, they just need to stop gangbanging and pull up their britches. Unless we put a stop to all this sooner or later we will be giving out the mule and an acre and it will probably be my mule and my acre that they get.

That actually makes very little sense given that until recently chicken was actually not a cheap meat at all. The phrase "a chicken in every pot" means prosperity because at the time the only chickens anyone ate were old hens or the few roosters. Laying hens were considered more valueable for their eggs.
Large chicken farms and meat breed chickens eventually changed this, but this seems to predate that change.
