Mayor comes under fire for sent e-mail with watermelons at White House

I wonder how long it will be before Al Sharpton steps in again? Although I don't particularly care for the reference, people need to grow a thicker skin. I'm sure that Obama has seen/heard much worse during his lifetime.

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif.?The mayor of Los Alamitos is coming under fire for an e-mail he sent out that depicts the White House lawn planted with watermelons, under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year."

Local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who is black, said Tuesday she received the e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose's personal account on Sunday and wants a public apology.

"I have had plenty of my share of chicken and watermelon and all those kinds of jokes," Price told The Associated Press. "I honestly don't even understand where he was coming from, sending this to me. As a black person receiving something like this from the city-freakin'-mayor?come on."

The Orange County Register first reported the e-mail on its Web site Tuesday night.

Grose confirmed to the AP that he sent the e-mail to Price and said he didn't mean to offend her. He said he was unaware of the racial stereotype that black people like watermelons.

He said he and Price are friends and serve together on a community youth board.

"Bottom line is, we laugh at things and I didn't see this in the same light that she did," Grose told the AP. "I'm sorry. It wasn't sent to offend her personally?or anyone?from the standpoint of the African-American race."

Grose, who became mayor in December, said he sent an apology e-mail to Price and her boss and also left her a voicemail apology.

Regardless, Price said it will be difficult for the two to work together.

"Now I am like?wow, is this really how he feels?" Price said.

Los Alamitos is a 2 1/4-square-mile Orange County city of around 12,000 people. The mayor is elected by fellow members of the five-seat City Council.

Can't say I'm shocked as I've seen plenty of this type of Email. Pretty stupid of a public official though. Oh, and apologists in 3... 2... 1...

I'm shocked - it's profoundly stupid, and from California, of all places. I don't doubt there are people who find such an e-mail "funny", but to actually send such a message, and to a black person, no less, is incredibly dumb for an elected official.

You really think this buffoon will have apologists? That's pretty cynical.

Yes, I do. I think the people who find material like this funny and send it to others would laugh it off as though 'some people' can't take a joke.

The watermelons must be for Michelle.

Why's that?

Well, she's not 50/50 like Zero, and with all the weight she has, probably could use some healthy food.

Hips don't lie.

Yeah, she's real fat for a middle aged woman with 2 kids. You do realize not everyone has a perfect model/swimmer build?

So, the email is a reference to First Lady Michelle Obama's race?

I never understood this stereotype...don't most people like watermelons? And fried chicken? If you fried a rabbit turd it would taste good. Everyone likes fried chicken.

He knew perfectly well what he was sending. Why would watermelons on the whitehouse lawn be anything special if it didn't mean to reference the stereotype ?

I don't know how the watermelon thing started, but the fried chicken part (IIRC) came from the fact that slaves would fry it so it would stay edible longer without spoiling.

Don't know if that's true or not...

Same way as chitterlings, pigs feet, okra and collard greens.

Cheap food in the south, slave owners didn't want to spend much money on their slaves and after they were freed they continued to eat cheap foods since they were still poor. So they ate foods that were easy to grow or keep for long periods of time as you mentioned or parts of animals most people threw away.

I call bullshit. Los Alamitos is not exactly teeming with black residents, so maybe Grose doesn't have much experience with blacks, but if you've paid any attention to the news in the past few months and years, you know what the stereotypes are for black people. This claiming ignorance excuse does not fly with me at all. And the cartoon makes no sense if you don't know the stereotype... Why would Obama just run out and start planting melons? No, this guy is either lying or an idiot; either way, he probably shouldn't be mayor.

considering how poor the south was in general i'm going to guess most people in the south ate those foods. besides, okra, greens and fried chicken are good eats.
