Maybe last upgrade for a while Q6600 or Q6700

I have tried searching/reading through many of the "Which Chip" threads, but still uncertain.

I need to upgrade and I have a small window.
My wife and I are expecting our first child here shortly, and I do not know if I will have the chance to upgrade for a while :)

I had an nForce4 MB which died, and E6600 seems fine, but don't if MB dying did anything to it.

I also have:
DDR2 800 2GB Memory
Geforce 8800GTX.

Seeing I have maybe the final ok from the wife to upgrade, I am going to take advantage of it.

I was deciding between the E6850, Q6600 or Q6700, but I think I want to go Quad.

I will be doing mostly gaming.

Will I really notice any difference between the Q6600 and the Q6700, and is there any reason to go E6850?

I was only thinking the Q6700, because I didn't know if I would see any difference right now from the E6600 and the Q6600.

Thank you for any input.

For gaming, you will see little or no difference between the E and Q, as nearly all games (with exception of the newer few) don't take advantage of the multi-threads available.

If you don't do any multi-thread applications (media encoding, photo editing), then the dualie should suffice - you can always OC later on to squeeze some speed if you need it, at a lower temp.

If there's ANYTHING at all you do that benefits from four cores, then go with the quad.

Not sure what the price difference between the Q6600 and Q6700 is, but I think the 6600 is the sweet spot right now in terms of performance vs. price.

I'd recommend the Q6600 - save some $$$, the kid is gonna need it. :)

The Q6700 has a higher stock clock and it has a 10x multiplier (Q6600 has 8x I believe) making it great for OCing, provided you have a good cooler for it. Other than that it's pretty much the same as the Q6600... If you have extra money, go for it, otherwise Q6600 will be plenty for a good while.

Wait, don't you make the money that SHE spends? but you need her permission to spend some?

I hate weak guys like that, no offense.

Unless she's making all the money, then there are some other issues.

I'd try out the E6600 and see if it works.

Have fun with your kid, it'll be hard, and you'll probably reach a point in your life where you'll regret it. Just kidding...

My wife and I almost make the same amount.

Not weak, just like to keep the wife happy, already have Wii, 360, PS3, iPhone, etc.

Any chance you are married, and if so still on first marriage? j/k

I handle the big things and my wife handles the less important things. for example, I worry about important things like world peace and the fantasy football injury report. She worries about things like where we live, what we drive, what time we eat, what time we sleep, what we do with our time off, etc.

get the Q6600 and a good air cpu cooler.

I'd go with the g0 q6600 just cause I don't see the reason to spend an additonal $250+ just for a few extra mhz. Especially when it can be oc'd beyond that.
