Dell Home has the Dell branded 100GB 7200rpm IDE HD for:

$229
- $45.80 (20% off Dell branded system upgrades)
- $25 ($25 off $150 coupon)
-----------------------------------------
$158.20 shipped (free shipping, no minimum)

This is a "maybe" because for some reason, I couldn't get the 20% discount to show up when I put the item into the cart. The $25 coupon showed up fine though. I suggest calling their Customer Service to order, citing this offer: 20% off Dell branded system upgrades.

Not as hot as the $120 price for the WD 100GB 7200rpm HD (WD1000BB) at Sam's Club a while ago. But the advantage of this deal is there's no MIR involved.

Knowing Smell Computer, this is probably a pricing error that will be canceled the day before it ships, two weeks out. :p

Dell drives are IBM, Maxtor or Western Digital.

I bought a Dell 60gb drive last month and they shipped a WD 60BB.

I have never been able to get the "Dell Branded Accessories" discount to work on hard drives. I guess Dell might not count parts and Dell branded or something. The drive I got doesn't say Dell on it anywhere.

I just waited for the 20% off Everything to order the 60gb.:)

In my experimentation, I couldn't get the 20% off to work on anything. In fact, the "subject" that appears at the top of the browser window says 15%, so who knows what's going on.

I don't want a WD drive.... Maybe they fixed their problems (if they had any), but I had quite a few WD drives die right before/after the 3 year mark. Right now, I'm partial to Maxtor, although I'd probably take a Seagate as well... And, with all the problems IBM recently had, I think I'd stick to my guns....

First of all, this isn't going to be a "pot luck" brand. Only a few companies even make 100 gig drives, and they all have received excellent reviews.

Buying a hard drive -- or not buying one -- based solely on the manufacturer is just stupid. Everyone makes crap at some point. Your best bet is to look at actual reviews of the specific drives in question. For those worried about Western Digital, I highly suggest looking at www.storagereview.com. WD is their #1 ranked 7200 rpm drive.

I ordered a Dell 40GB HD last time. It was a WD 40GB. The thing is when I was reading through the description it says under support that they will support if it is used with a Dell system. I don't know if anyone called and asked about their policy on support for these drives if used on other systems. I sold mine away so I wouldn't have to worry about not having a waranty on it if anything happened to it.

why all the cr*pping on dell? i've ordered ram from them several times. Each time, it was a good deal and shipped within 2-3days. Their tracking system could use some work, but who's doesn't?

Other than ppl here trying to take advantage by ordering items with pricing errors (that eventually get cancelled) what's the big gripe against them??

as for this deal, if you knew the oem on the drive, it seems like a good deal...

The 20% off Dell branded system upgrades offer worked fine on the Dell branded 80GB 7200rpm IDE HD though. Similar deal:

$205
- $41 (20% off)
- $25 ($25 off $150)
----------------------------------------------
= $139 shipped (free shipping)

Not too bad. In general, I try to get HD for $1.50/GB so a 80GB should cost about $120. This is kinda close. (I got in on the deal for the Maxtor 20GB 7200rpm HD from OD for $30 after MIR a while back. That one fits the $1.50/GB budget.)

Has anyone gotten this to work with both discounts on this 100 gig? I know it's possible, but has it been done?

Nope, for some reason it won't show up. Might wanna try calling it in to see if they'll do it for you. When you list the Dell Dimension Hard Drive Upgrades it isn't listed so there might be some kind of database problem on Dell's part. Their system doesn't know it should be generating the automatic 20% off.
