Maxtor vs Westerndigital vs Seagate 120gig

Well i'm looking into 120 gig HD's.... with 8 meg cache's and 7200 rpm at least... try to keep the price under 130 per drive via newegg.com

Which is the best? some say western digital makes hi pitched noises at idle, and i personally have always thought maxtor to be a shoddy brand...

Shoot away!

there are some reviews at Storage Review.com

it's really a matter of preferance.

(note: below are opinions
i prefer WD drives (never had the whine)
I also think Maxtor is kinda shoddy
never had a seagate

Maxtor-not enough experience, but members love here. Plenty of deals on them to ge them pretty cheap.

WD-pretty fast but yes I can hear my 80GB one. Had no complaints, 3 year warranty compared to the Maxtor with only 1.

Seagate : very very quiet. Very good repuatation on quality.

I would goto storagereview.com and compare.

i think i'm gonna go with the WD special edition.. has a 3 year warranty........ the seagate dosent but there is a samsung that does..

The WD is ATA100,
the samsung is ATA133.....

both have 3 year warranty. would the ATA133 out perform the WD ata100?

Both have 8 meg cache

I do not think the performance increase (100 vs 133) would be that obvious.

I have the exact WD version you are considering ($70 after rebates) at Best Buy last week. I have had Maxtors in the past, but I have not seen any worries with the WD.

I would go WD.
I've had a 100BB for 2 years next month. Problem free *knocks on wood*
Then again I have 2 Samsung drives (6.4GB & 8.4GB) that are like 5 years old & still working....hmmm.

Anyways, I would probably go for the WD because it is probably faster.

looks like unless you are using it for a server drive, the seagate is the big winner.

Actually, you have that backwards. Seagate's pretty much the big loser in those comparisons, and quite handily at more than a few.
That said, I'll never give up my Seagates. I love the peace and quiet 🙂.

Considering that no ATA drive currently on the market can even break the maximum bandwidth available with ATA66 (let alone having and Average Sustained Transfer Rate above ATA66 bandwidth) I don't think it'd be obvious either 😉

Ok now read it again and pay attention to all the sections ...... and now go read it again (actually read it not just focusing on the pink highlights).

i love my seagate. i've had all three and the perf. is the same for all practical purposes, but the seagate is WAY more quiet. all my wd drives have this really annoying, high-pitched whine, and the maxtors are just kind of noisy!

I heard that the WD 120 JB's are the new deathstars. But they do come with a 3 year warrenty so that might be worth it I have a 40 Gig 7200 RPM Maxtor that has fluid bearings. I can adjust the niose level the drive makes basically with the quite setting I have never heard it. With the drive on performance it I can hear it seek but it is nothing to loud. My next drive would be a WD but thats only cause it would be a raptor. My Maxtor has run great for a number of year works perfectly for me.

Hmmmm I don't recall saying anything about Seagate or any brand when I suggested you re-read it but whatever.

ATA133 doesnt really make any difference, which is why most manufactuars dont bother offering it. Be warned, Western Digitials tend to make a very irritating whine, however they are indeed fast, I myself prefer seagate for being so quiet.

I concur w/ this assessment. BTW, the "Plus" models of the Seagate 7200.7 come w/ a 3 yr warrantee, and would get my vote unless you're only priority is speed.
