I always prefer to put Maxtor and WD in the same quality category with WD having a bit more clout when it comes to laying down the money. I put IBM and Quantum in thier own corner waiting for a GREAT deal to make them an undeniable preference. In the long run I think that they are all pretty much the same with only minor percentage points separating the differences in price, performance and reliability...in other words we're splitting hairs here...
 
i've used 2 Quantums and 1 Maxtor...never had a WD in my pc...
1 Quantum's micro chip caught fire...and it's dead now...and the maxtor has bad sector on it after only a few months...
I hope WD are far more better than those...
 
Maxtor all the way, didn't they acquire quantum anyway because I thought I remembered reading that the new maxtor drives look exactly like fireballs, i could be wrong, could have been seagate
 
I would go with WD, I have bought 4 Western Digital harddrives so far and so far I have not had a problem with any of them!!!! I have had one maxtor and it lasted all of six month before it died.

The Western Digital WD1200JB and WD100JB (the drives with 8Mb cache) are noticeably faster than anything Maxtor offers in bootup, loading game levels, and even browsing the web...as confirmed by the real world bootup and gaming tests on Storagereview.com. Other than the two drives with 8Mb cache optimized for desktop apps and games, Western Digital doesn't have much going for itself. In sizes smaller than 100Gb, Maxtor's drives are better/faster than the WD drives; because they are available in smaller sizes, the Maxtor drives also tend to be cheaper (although there were some great deals recently, like the WD1200JB for $177 shipped from Dell two weeks ago).

Also, if noise is an issue, all the high performance WD drives produce more noise than the Maxtor drives...although the Maxtor drives, even in the fluid bearing model, are nowhere near as quiet as the Seagate Barracuda IV.

The latest drives of WD, Seagate, and Maxtor are all roughly equal in reliability.
 
The big WDs, WD1000 and 1200, BB or JB, are indeed quicker drives than Maxtor's in desktop situations, but the difference is not mind-blowing, what looks to be a huge difference in SR graphs may feel like nothing by a real user. Unless you time your bootup and games, you wont even be bothered by the difference. In a server situation though, the Maxtor is the more superior drive thanks to it's fast seek times. Like previously stated, if the capacity you desire is less than 100GB, then the choice is clearly Maxtor as they easily beat WD in capacities of 80GB and less. And personally, I like Maxtor's reliability more, not to mention their excellent support.
 
i hate maxtor drives, why you ask.

1) i have one drive that is so loud you can hear it on the other side of the house

2) the other maxtor drive i have failed in 3 months,


bad luck? maybe, but i'll never buy another one.
 
What if Maxtor had an 8MB cache performance drive, wonder how it would fare against the Western Digitan Special Edition? 🙂
