Maxtor RMA (Powermax question)

Ok I have two Maxtor drives that have gone bad on me.
#1 IS A 60 GIGER, I have run powermax on it and have gotten a error code (needed for the RMA process) so that one is good to go.

#2 Is a 20 gigger, it has no bad sectors but it takes around 8 hours to scandisk it. I have powermax running on it right now and like scandisk it's taking FOR EVER!

There is something obviously WRONG with this drive, as it runs REEEAAAAAAL SLOOOOW. Yet I get the feeling powermax isn't going to give me a error code and according the Maxtor I can't RMA the drive without one!

WTF?

Anyone had this sort of problem with a drive and or RMA process?

When I RMA'd my 200g, I got my error code but do not recall the form ever asking me for it. None the less, the RMA process was the easiest I ever did.

Well...12 hours later and powermax is STILL running.

I guess I could try using the same error code that I got for the other bad drive, though I hate to lie about it.

just tell them what's happening and they will allow an rma. I've been through this and they never asked for an error code.

Last time I checked Maxtor still had a no quibble warranty policy, or just say it has a repetitive clicking noise and locks up

I just had my first ever Hard Drive failure last week 🙁

Yep a Maxtor 80GB - e-mailed them first to request a standard RMA - ended up with the advanced RMA where they ship the drive to you first then you return your damaged one in their box 😉

My SMART warning advised me to backup my data - however the computer would not boot when I attempted to get the PC up and running - so much for SMART technology. It would appear that the drive suffered mechanical failure - it just keeps clicking when I attempt to start the machine 🙁

Guess I need to learn all about backing up data for future reference 🙁
