maxtor or seagate?????

Hi,

What`s the best of these two?
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X 80Gb 7200rpm U-ATA133
or
Seagate Barracuda IV 80.0Gb, 7200rpm, ATA100

I know the diff is the ATA, but is that really a problem????

Out of those 2, I would pick the seagate. But the most popular harddrive around here is the WD 80Gb Specail Edition with 8mb of cache. It's ATA 100, but that's plenty for HD's right now.

peace

hm, heard some people talk bad about the western digital.

But heard great stories about the IBM 120GXP U-ATA100
So what I1ve read in the other topic, maxtor is the least popular.

Now the choice is
IBM Deskstar 120GXP, 80Gb, IDE, 7200rpm U-ATA100
Seagate Barracuda IV 80.0Gb, 7200rpm, ATA100
and you say the
Western Digital 80.0Gb, 7200rpm, ATA100, 8Mb cache

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

think I`ll buy the cheapest of these 3

Dont buy the IBM. Do a search of IBM hard drives in these forums and you will find that the reliability is not all that great. I would personally go with the Seagate if I were you.

I agree, between my friends and I we got a total of 6 75GXP drives and now only 1 still works, and I had to RMA my 45GB 75GXP 3 times! The 60GXP was supposedly supposed to fix that but even the 60GB replacement they had to RMA (after which I sold b/c IBM is worthless). 120GXP is supposedly supposed to fix this problems but I don't know IBM has lied before.

WD reliability bad? hmmm, hope not! 🙂
Got a 30g 5400 caviar that's a couple years old, got a 80g 7200 BB (2mb) and two 80g JB specials. The specials ROCK! 😉

ok... shouldn't notice much of a difference from ATA100 to ATA133... as far as brand... Maxtor and Seagates are pretty reliable (this has been debated over and over again)... but if you check user statistics... most people have either maxtors or seagates... most people have good experiences with either... if the price range is about the same... I'd go for the faster ATA133... also check average seek time and onboard memory buffer... although this shouldn't make a noticable difference...

There are threads about "best hard drives" all the time. Seagate, WD, Maxtor. My only requirements: 7200rpm, ata100. Then I just buy the one with the best price per gb I can find at that time.

I would check out the newer Maxtor drives with the fluid bearings, I hear they are nearly silent (have to put your ear up on it), even at 7200 RPM.

I've got a Seagate Barracuda IV in my families comp and all i can say is...i can't hear the drive 😉, plus it's pretty fast and does its' jobs. In my rig I have an IBM 75GXP but i'm with the others on this one, don't get a 75GXP because a lot of people have had many problems with them. I jsut got lucky

So most answers say go for the seagate barracuda IV, thx think I`ll go for that.

One last thing, most people say the IBM 75GXP isn`t all that good, does anyone have any exp with the 120GXP????

You're not the only lucky one in the crowd. I've had two 45GB 75GXP's running 24/7 for over a year now. 😀

I'm on my third maxtor, never a problem. Went through a bad batch of seagates a few years ago.....three bad ones....never again.

Yea Maggotry, and yours are the 45GB versions :Q, lol. I have a 30GB one. hehe

The new fluid drive maxtors are INCREDIBLY quiet. I had a friend who just purchased a 60gb one and it is my honest opinoin that unless your watercooling your entire system (video, psu included) you wont even know its running. The normal maxtors have always been the queitest drives I've ever seen, but these new ones are just mute.

I'm going to have to put my vote in form maxtor though. I know WD's are good, I havent used any of the newer ones (20gb+) but I had luck with them in the past. IBM is a curse to me. I've watched 2 die on me, (lost ALL data) segate is another I dont have much experience with. But I've probably bought and used 12-15 maxtor hard drives in the last 2-3 years with 100% sucess. Hell I've got a 3-4 year old 40gb ata66 maxtor (I paid over $300 for it, if that tells you hold old it is) and its still running to this day without a hitch.

I Did buy one from a guy on the FS/FT forums here that was dead when I was recieved it but I just rma'd it and got it back last week.
